SR DESIGN ENGINEER - MECHANICAL

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

Broad knowledge of an advanced technical field such as mechanics or mechanical engineering.  Fluent verbal and written skills.  Working knowledge of  Unigraphics, and/or Pro E design tools along with analytical tools for stress and thermal analysis.  Working knowledge of Military and ANSI Specifications, Microsoft office suite and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.  Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline and course work leading to a Master’s degree.  10 to 13 years of related experience.

DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, perform mathematical and mechanical design analyses using advanced mathematics and computer techniques.  Design, analyze and trouble shoot mechanical devices for Fuzing and Memory systems products in accordance with military and ANSI specifications. Apply research to the planning, design, development and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, and/or machines.  Implement engineering designs from concept to final hardware.  Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Create, validate and verify complex mechanical designs from customer high-level system or internal product requirements.  Perform complex mathematical analyses, tolerance studies for various products and publish technical reports.  Select component materials, material data sheets.  Perform various complex analyses, including finite element analyses as required by in-house verification policies and customer’s statement of work.  Perform complex design analyses including functional performance, contract specifications, mechanical/electrical interfaces, standardization, worst-case tolerance, and stress and thermal surveys.  Conduct design risk analysis during concept proposals and programs reviews, and interrelate to reliability analysis performed by a reliability engineer. Perform design verification analysis and develop database in the design model testing process.  Use analytical results to guide the design process.  Update design analysis throughout the design and development process as new data and test results become available.  

Lead project teams providing input to the overall design, participate in design reviews, and assist in qualification tests, maintainability tests and product acceptance tests.   Monitor the status of projects and schedules to ensure that established milestones are accomplished.  Where problems occur, determine cause and impact and initiate corrective action. Direct all phases of assigned projects from inception through completion.  Lead internal and/external design reviews.

Participate in formal reviews such as Preliminary Design reviews (PDR), Critical Design reviews (CDR), and program technical reviews.  Prepare and submit reports as required.

Provide support to new business proposal efforts and provide specific technical input in accordance with design concepts/details proposed, including proposal estimating of required design/project tasks.

Establish and maintain effective communication with functional units, customer representatives, suppliers, and production teams to fulfill the requirements of assigned projects, facilitate problem identification and resolution.  Interact effectively with all levels of employees to support departmental as well as organizational goals. Identify problem areas/issues; recommend and/or take corrective action, as required.

Provide back up support to supervisor in his absence and guide, direct and assist junior engineers.  Available to travel, as required.  Perform special projects as assigned.
