Purpose of position
Provide
complex administrative and technical skills requiring the use of
initiative and judgment and to supervise a number of professional staff
members in complex duties. This position functions as the Deputy
Radiation/Laser Safety Officer for the campus in support of the
Radiation/Laser Safety Officer.
Essential functions
Deputy
Radiation Safety Officer. Oversee day to day management of the
Radiation Safety Program. Provide direct supervision of the Safety
Specialist I and II positions and student employees. Maintain and
conduct radiation and x-ray safety courses.
Deputy
Laser Safety Officer. Maintain the program with continuance of the
comprehensive training, inspections and hazard analyses of laser
installations, and web-based laser registration program. Compliance
Review and Assurance. Monitor campus compliance with applicable
regulations, guidelines, registrations, permits and licenses. Assure
compliance initiatives are developed, implemented and reviewed. Review
plans for construction, renovation and demolition of University
properties for safety and compliance concerns. Serve as alternate
Trustworthiness and Reliability Official. Occupational Safety. Perform
accident and preventative investigations, electromagnetic field (ELF)
and extremely low frequency (ELF) surveys.

Licenses:
Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving
Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License
within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
Required qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited academic institution in Engineering,
Applied or Basic Science, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or
related field. Four years of experience in environmental health and
safety compliance. Eligible to be certified in one of the following:
Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by American Academy of Health
Physicists; Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by Board of Certified
Safety Professionals; Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) by Board of
Laser Safety; Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by American Board of
Industrial Hygiene. Must be able to pass university and FBI security
background checks. Equivalent combination of relevant education and
experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred qualifications
Degree
from an accredited academic institution in Health Physics, Nuclear or
Radiation Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Radiation Biology.
More than four years of full-time health physics or laser safety
experience at an academic/research institution. Certified in one or
more of the following: Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by American
Academy of Health Physicists; Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by
Board of Certified Safety Professionals; Certified Laser Safety Officer
(CLSO) by Board of Laser Safety; Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
by American Board of Industrial Hygiene. USDOT/ICAO/IATA Hazardous
Material Shipper's Certification. Texas Commercial Driver License with
hazardous material endorsement.
