Duties: The successful candidate will report to the Director of the MBLWHOI Library. The library was recently funded to create public resource database of images, videos, and animations of cells from a variety of organisms, including both cell architecture and intracellular functionalities from the NIH in collaboration with American Society for Cell Biology.
- Develop accessible and highly usable web applications for the ingestion, annotation, curation and use of cell images, video and other multimedia objects
- Develop solutions for loading, manipulating and searching large amounts of varied data (images, audio, text)
- Develop solutions for presenting a variety of multimedia objects in a useful, innovative, attractive way
- Work within an agile environment where core practices include test-driven development, continuous integration, small release cycles, and collective code ownership
- Interact with other MBL informatics groups and collaborators including the Biology of Aging team, the Biodiversity Heritage Library literature informatics team, and the Encyclopedia of Life initiative that is, in part, being led by the Marine Biological Laboratory Conditions: The position is full-time, and available starting November 1, 2009. The incumbent will be evaluated annually and re-appointed contingent upon satisfactory performance, project needs, and available funds. Funding is currently committed for 2 years from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. |
Preferred Qualifications: |
-Training or experience in biological science (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics) is a plus
- Knowledge of Ruby/Rails web development
- Knowledge/experience in using semantic web technologies and ontologies
