POSITION DESCRIPTIONScientist/Sr. Scientist (Materials Development)
Allergan Medical, a division of Allergan, Inc., located in Santa Barbara, California offers the most comprehensive, science based portfolio of Total Facial Rejuvenation products available, including BOTOX Cosmetic; hyaluronic acid and collagen based dermal fillers; and physician dispensed skin care products. Allergan Medical also offers the industry's widest range of breast implant options for reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery, and leading minimally invasive devices for obesity intervention treatment.
Develops new biomaterials for use in next generation aesthetics and implant products via synthesis, formulation, fabrication, and characterization of candidates with aim of achieving targeted bulk and surface properties.
Responsible for putting together detailed Project Plans including realistic deliverables with timelines. Actively involved in the planning and execution of experimental studies for the development of novel biomaterials. Applies scientific expertise in the creation of in-house materials and the evaluation of external, existing candidates. Accumulates data and observations on candidate evaluation and makes recommendations for next step. Biomaterial research activities and projects can be in one or across multiple business areas (Facial, Breast, Health).
Actively works in a team environment. Frequent communication is essential and must interface with colleagues in Biomaterials Development, Analytical Services, Product Development, and Cell & Tissue areas. Will remain as "internal consultant" as technology moves into Product Development and ultimately into Manufacturing. May be responsible for supporting raw material efforts in choosing potential suppliers, qualifying incoming lots, developing proper analytical assays, and drafting of specifications.
Organizes, schedules and participates in project team meetings to define and schedule project activities and review completed tasks. Communicates project status to supervisor, project team leader, other research managers, and R&D committees as appropriate. Prepares time and cost estimates of project activities for review by manager to achieve realistic project completion dates.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related field with 0-3 years of industrial experience. Work experience involving biomaterials is a plus. Sound knowledge of structure-property relationships as it applies to both bulk and surface attributes of polymeric materials is essential. Experience in one or more of the following technology areas is desirable: biomedical material synthesis, cross-linked/modified biomaterials, hydrogels, biodegradable polymers or vehicles, biomaterial - tissue interfaces, polymer fabrication processes, and tissue scaffolding/engineering.
Essential Skills and Abilities
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical journals and procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, documentation and procedures.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers or technical peer groups.
Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced math and statistical theory (i.e. t-tests, f-tests, tolerance limits)
Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
Ability to learn various software programs.
Ability to analysis drawing for dimensions, tolerance and interfit investigations, and conformance to ANSI Y14.5.
