Security Systems Engineer

About the Job

Purpose: This position reports to the Systems & Technology Team Leader and will work closely with the Laboratory Shift Superintendent's Office to oversee and coordinate security projects at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Systems Engineer is responsible for implementation, compliance, and documentation of security and safety projects which may span throughout the Laboratory. The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with several different disciplines, coordinating requirements with facility personnel while complying with safety and health requirements prior to implementation. The Systems Engineer will establish designs to security systems requirements; establish Computer Aided Designs documenting component locations and operations; review new technology and maintain documentation; and perform analytical, interpretative, and coordination of related activities in support of security systems. This work will be performed in accordance with Standards-Based Management Systems (SBMS) and work control processes.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: Responsible for coordinating, planning, and scheduling work activities regarding security and safety systems work throughout the ORNL site. Configure, lead, and coordinate multidiscipline teams to install, troubleshoot, and implement work activities. This job includes working with fiber optics, telecommunications, public address (PA) systems, barrier systems, emergency management, and computer systems. The person is expected to establish and maintain a culture that supports team and personnel safety as well as the needs of their customers. The selected candidate shall become knowledgeable in all related security procedures and regulations needed to support the Laboratory mission. Will assist management in process reviews on self-assessments and audits, as needed, and conduct internal self-assessments and resolve any findings derived from this process. Shall maintain documentation and drawings of all systems assigned in compliance with SBMS procedures and work control processes. May serve as primary or secondary point of contact on a 24/7 support system. Support documentation control, compliance requirements, and safety requirements for the Laboratory.

Qualifications Required: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering; or a related field and at least five years experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Applicant must possess a proven track record of a safe and successful work history. Relevant experience should include physical security disciplines, knowledge, and experience with assessment systems, physical barriers, mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical barrier operated systems, and PA systems. Strong verbal and written communication, compliance, documentation, interpersonal and organizational management skills are required for the job. As this position requires extensive interaction with union craft, someone with knowledge and experience in supervising unionized craft is preferred. Applicant must be highly organized and able to prioritize and schedule multiple activities. Additionally, the applicant must demonstrate strong computer skills especially in Microsoft Outlook (e-mail and calendar), Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel (data management and tracking) and Computer Aided Design computer work (preference Micro station experience). Preference will be given to experienced engineers with experience in effective personal interactions with facility personnel and supervision.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a "Q" clearance.

This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
