Job Responsibilities/Department description:
Works directly with scientists to identify risks and formulate best practices. Develops and implements safety and environmental policies, procedures and programs and maintains efficient operations. Ensures that policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state and local regulations and reporting requirements and accounts for/integrates corporate policies as applicable. Manages Site Safety Professionals to ensure the implementation of the overall Safety and Safety Management programs, reviewing and recommending changes to procedures and operations to assess and mitigate potential safety risks to employees, with particular attention to potential exposures to hazardous materials. Keeps current on safety regulations, accepted standards, reporting and regulatory requirements, and evaluates their effect on operations. Conducts periodic internal audits and inspections of facilities to assure compliance with company policies and procedures, and assists with corporate or third party audits. Represents the Safety area on internal task forces and with external auditors, regulators and agencies. Stays current on corporate initiatives and recommends site-implementation as appropriate. Makes recommendations to senior site management to account for evolving needs or changing standards.

Provides direction to subordinates based on general policies and management guidance. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Interprets and executes procedures that typically affect subordinate organizational units. Recommends modifications to operating policies. Accomplishes results through a matrix of subordinate safety professionals, the Site Environmental Safety Committee, effective interactions with the corporate safety and environmental functions, and through management at the site level.

Basic Qualifications:
7-10 years experience with a BS/MS in Safety or Industrial Hygiene including in a chemistry/pharmaceutical research organization.

Preferred Qualifications:
Must have good communications, team, organizational and writing skills. Must be able to multi-task.
