Senior Mechanic
JOB SUMMARY: Performs all tractor and trailer estimation, diagnosis, and corrections following standard operating procedures (SOP’s). Performs all major and minor repairs in a proficient manner including major wreck repair. Diagnoses and repairs all trailer electrical systems. Performs DOT inspections on all tank components and repairs components in a proficient manner. Completes routine rebuilds and replacements, makes best value and safety decisions to continue to operate, repair or replace, and then performs technical repairs and/or replacement. Uses American Trucking Association (ATA) system and other published and internet-based manuals and check sheets. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Diagnoses and repairs problems in the areas including all external component replacements and routine repairs, annual vehicle inspections (AVIs), Planned Maintenance (PM), brake jobs, lighting repairs, cab repairs, king pin replacement, steering problem diagnosis / repair, drive train component diagnosis and replacement, suspension diagnosis and repair, and Qualcomm / Sensor Trac diagnosis and repair.
- Reads paper and electronic instructions to understand, document and close completed work orders. Utilizing paper (i.e. permits) and computer systems (M5) to accurately create, track and complete work order repairs including the tracking of time (labor hours), parts used and work completed.
- Performs starting and charging system repairs, routine cooling diagnostics and re-charge, routine electrical diagnostics and repairs including common fault codes.
- Repairs/replaces components on the body, trailer, chassis, and container to s include roof replacements, panel and side post repair / replacement, rail splice / replacement, door header replacement, sub-frame replacement, and major wreck repair.
- In bulk shops – Diagnoses and repairs Hydra-Pac, product pump and compressors.. Performs 4 month and annual tank inspection, 5 yr. Inspection, Thickness Testing, Spark Lining testing, valve diagnosis / repair including vacuum and pressure valves, unloading valves, skin replacement, accident repair, pit welding, and ABS diagnosis / repair.
- Individually or in conjunction with another Mechanic, performs tractor Planned Maintenance (PMs) including responsibility for resolving any equipment performance problems identified by the driver.
- When necessary, performs accident repairs on tractors or trailers including welding and complex component changes (engine swings, frame rebuilds, etc).
- Actively participates in Center of Excellent (COE) programs.
- Completes the initial estimation of required repairs or directs the estimation to another associate who can further diagnose and estimate the required repair, cost and repair timeline.
- Communicates with internal customers (i.e. other shop associates, drivers, DRIVER BUSINESS LEADERs, other maintenance shops, etc.) on such things as stances, wait times, reasons for repair decisions and status updates.
- If licensed, drives commercial equipment in the yard and on public roads which requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to diagnose problems and take corrective actions. CDL not required.
- Utilizes parts book, the computer, service bulletins and other resources to research problems and identify and locate parts. Charges out parts removed from inventory and assists in maintaining parts inventory.
- Responsible for general janitorial duties.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS and QUALIFICATIONS:- Technical degree, certificate, or diploma in diesel engines, electronics, and/or related systems or equivalent amount of experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of industry experience, completion of a nationally accredited, industry specific technical school program, or FMDP graduate totaling at least 2 years of experience. (Must meet Vehicle and Brake Inspector Qualification requirements).
- Minimum of 3 years of industry experience specific to Bulk Tank repair and be a High School graduate to be HM 213 certified. (DOT requirements to be certified) in Bulk Shops.
- Problem solving skills.
- Tool mastery – valve test equipment, tri-meter, thickness testing equipment, spark testing equipment, pressure test equipment, tank entry harness / retrieval, welders, multi-meter, cutting torch, frame / body straightening equipment, torque box, hand and power tools, and shop computer navigation.
- Excellent customer service, oral and written communication, and teambuilding skills.
- Successfully demonstrated welding skills in non-standard situations and on varying materials.
- Skill with windows based computer systems, preferred.
- Ability to provide own basic hand tools. (The Shop Manager or Shop Supervisor will cover other required tools.)
