The Senior Product Development Scientist is responsible for product development of adhesives and coatings for the food packaging industry. Chemistries and desirable expertise include polyesters, polyurethanes, heat seal adhesives, and other curing or non-curing systems for food packaging adhesive and coating applications. A synthetic understanding of polyester and urethane chemistry is desirable as well the ability to link underlying concepts of coating science and applied technology to meet customer’s coating needs. This person will plan the project work within a certain time frame, conduct lab work to identify the most effective approaches, and communicate these findings and new solutions to both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop differentiated solutions to specific product, market, and customer needs; develop and apply advanced predictive test methods.

  • Lead complex development projects - independently plan experimental design, conduct and organize lab work and testing as needed

  • Present effectively and work across internal functions of sales, marketing, regulatory, and manufacturing to bring newly developed products and solutions from prototype to commercialization. Establish good relationships and communicate effectively across internal functions and with external customers.

  • Understand pertinent patent and scientific literature within relevant technical areas; utilize internal and external knowledge management tools for new patents or technology search. Develop capabilities in analyzing and understanding the implications of prior art and competitive technology.

  • Understand important regulatory requirements affecting existing technology and markets.

  • Prepare monthly technical reports, trip reports, project reports, patent disclosures, and publishable technical papers.

  • Travel to internal and customer locations for technical support, product introduction, line trials as required (approximately10%).


Who we are looking for

Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years of research/product development experience required
Advanced degree (Master degree or PhD) in polymer science, chemical engineering or chemistry, PhD is more preferred
Track record of technical capabilities evidenced by invention disclosures/patents/journal paper/new product development/new product commercialization
Adhesives or coatings application and coating knowledge a plus
Solid knowledge of organic chemistry and/or polymer science with an understanding of the relationship between chemical structure and physical properties.
Prior industrial experience in the Flexible Packaging Industry is a plus
