Senior Reefer Mechanic

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs  minor body and undercarriage repairs in a proficient manner.  Diagnoses and repairs electrical, refrigerant, and mechanical problems on reefer units including PM maintenance.  ThermoKing reefer experience preferred.

Performs all tractor and trailer estimation, diagnosis, and corrections following standard operating procedures (SOP’s).  Performs all major and minor repairs in a proficient manner including major wreck repair. Diagnoses and repairs all trailer electrical systems. Performs DOT inspections on all tank components and repairs components in a proficient manner. Completes routine rebuilds and replacements, makes best value and safety decisions to continue to operate, repair or replace, and then performs technical repairs and/or replacement. Uses American Trucking Association (ATA) system and other published and internet-based manuals and check sheets. 

 

Technical Knowledge

·         Minimum of 1 yr. industry experience.

·         General diagnostic work and routine repairs including knowledge to make best value repair decisions.

·         Ability to perform repairs in accordance with established SOP, COE, and DOT guidelines.

·         Thorough understanding of sensors, wiring,  ECUs, wiring schematics, and Multi-temp systems.

·         Advanced understanding of Reefer electrical and mechanical systems.

 

Complexity of Duties

·         Tool mastery – refrigerant recovery / charging equipment, torque box, MPSI reader, Laptop, welders, multi-meter, cutting torch, soldering equipment, scaffolding, frame / body straightening equipment, hand and power tools.

·         Estimates parts and labor.

·         Proficiently performs  , sub frame, brakes, lights / wiring, and  minor body repairs.

·         Diagnoses complex mechanical, refrigerant, and electrical problems related to all Reefer systems (single & multi-temp),  including engine, cooling, heating, and onboard computer modules.

·         Communicates and resolves issues with OEMs.   Internet / intranet navigation proficiency.

·         Utilizes laptop PC and reefer diagnostic software. Updates sensor parameters in ECU.

·         Participates in the development and presentation of training curriculum.

·         Resource for identifying problems and solutions to manufacturing / design problems for the tech team and warranty department.

 

Typical Work

·         Minimum technical requirements for this role include all external component replacements (starters, alternators, water pumps etc.) and routine repairs and inspections including AVIs,  reefer PMA   PMCs, fan motor replacements, and rebuilding belt idler assemblys. Typical body repairs include roof / side panel patching, prop leg and support replacement, roll up door repair /   panel replacement, sub-frame replacement, interior lining repair, and routine repairs to lighting, brake system (including ABS), suspension and axle alignment.

·         The fully qualified Senior Mechanic – Reefer Trailer will perform repairs and diagnostics on starting and charging system, complex cooling and re-charge, and electrical including common fault codes on single and multi-temp units. These repairs include performing leak detection procedures, compressor replacements, rebuilding throttling valves, soldering refrigerant lines, evaporator / condenser replacements, and front main engine seal replacements.

 

Required Certifications and Training

·         Must complete all safety compliance and tire training

·         Annual vehicle Inspector Qualification

·         Brake Inspector Qualification

·         EPA 608 Certification (Refrigerant handling / repairs)
