Our National Security Global Business is currently seeking a Senior Research Scientist - Sediment Management. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio but is negotiable. Battelle's Environmental Product Line is a $50M business annually, offering clients a complete range of environmental solutions to solve their unique challenges. The product line delivers solutions to both government and commercial clients leveraging technical talents across Battelle and utilizes science-based approaches to address our nation's most complex sediment management needs. The product line is seeking a Senior Research Scientist who will provide leadership in growing this aspect of the business.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
The successful candidate will specialize in contaminated sediment investigations, monitoring, assessment and remediation of marine/estuarine systems and urban rivers, as well as other sediment management practices, including beneficial use and dredge sediment disposal. This position will provide leadership for growing the group's business base and contributing to the development of its staff, facility, and equipment resources to meet annual business volume and net profit growth at targets set by senior management. The ideal candidate will expand the sediment management service offering of the Environmental Product Line's strategic plan by applying her/his demonstrated experience in and knowledge of the field.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develops and implements sediment management aspects of the Environmental Product Line's strategic business plan.
2. Contributes to the identification and analysis of business opportunities in support of the sediment management service offering, including market potential, key clients, and viability of methods and technologies for business emphasis, to meet a yearly gross revenue target to be set by senior management.
3. Leads and participates in marketing activities to clients, manages and contributes to proposal preparation and review.
4. Identifies technical area needs and coordinates with management and other scientists to develop innovative solutions to client problems.
5. Builds and maintains Battelle's reputation as a sediment management leader.
6. Provides expert technical advice to management, including working with management to develop investment plans to support growth of the service offering.
7. Acts as an effective project/program manager for projects that she/he is assigned and builds client relationships.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL DEMONSTRATE
1. A working knowledge of sediment monitoring, assessment and remedial practices
2. Ability to identify project opportunities, lead project teams, and contribute to overall sediment management service offering growth.
3. A record of publications, presentations and active involvement in sediment management trade groups.
4. Experience working on comprehensive and technical projects/programs related to contaminated sediment sites and other aspects of sediment management, including dredge disposal and beneficial use.
5. Application of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness in the service offering and/or the development of innovative technical principles, theories, and concepts.
6. Ability to plan and implement project and programs.
7. Independent thought and ability to identify and resolve problems associated with the development and implementation of complex projects and programs.
8. Ability to consult with management on short- and long-range business planning.
9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
Requires a Bachelors degree (minimum) in environmental science, engineering, or related field and greater than 10 years of experience, specifically in the sediment management practice area. Candidate must possess sufficient communication skills to effectively interact with senior management and scientific staff internally and within client organizations, subcontractor and consulting forums. Candidate must have superior knowledge of sediment remedial alternatives and experience performing investigation design, physical and chemical sediment characterization, managing field staff and subcontractors, and coordinating complex schedules and budgets.
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:
A Masters or higher degree in an environmental field and a clear understanding and connection to the environmental marketplace is important to growing this business, as well as demonstrated ability to think and act strategically.
