Responsibilities/Duties

Elster is seeking a knowledgeable Software Engineer/Developer with core competencies around backend server development.  The position is focused on new feature development, not maintenance.  One must be able to work independently due to a fast-paced work environment. 

• Software engineer to help accelerate the development of features on the product roadmap.


• Candidate will be responsible for developing components of Elster's smart grid software.  Specific responsibilities will include: 


• Provide estimates of development effort and risk to Product Management for new features based on requirements analysis


• Design and implement new functionality to meet requirements


• Develop new software solutions focusing on scalability and ease of deployment


• Focus on performance and high availability of the data collection system


• Work within the development team to share responsibility for the product architecture


• Document design decisions and participate in design reviews


• Become an in-house expert on Elster's 2-way AMI metering and home automation products


• Support and enhance core C++ software, create new software components in C++, Java, C# or other languages


• Lead design decision-making and architectural definition tasks


• Help the team resolve level 3 customer support issues


• Support Software Quality Assurance by reviewing test plans


• Recommend improvements to the software development and release process


• Take ownership of complex business-critical portions of the software system

Qualifications

• Must have a Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field


• Minimum of 8 years software development experience using Object Oriented methodology


• Prior experience designing scalable solutions


• Prior experience with C++ software development


• Experience designing, implementing, and debugging multithreaded server applications in C++ on Windows Server platforms


• Experience with Java or C# software development


• Prior experience with XML and related technologies


• Prior experience writing software using relational databases


• Prior experience with distributed systems


• Working knowledge of Windows operating system


• Excellent communication skills


• Ability to learn quickly


• Excellent problem solving skills


• Ability to work independently when appropriate as well as work in a close team environment


• Experience with Microsoft Visual C++ development


• Experience using Oracle 11g


• Experience with Python, Perl, or another scripting language


• Experience deploying software on Windows Server systems


• Experience developing data collection systems


• Knowledge of metering or automated meter reading


• Experience using Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest


• Experience writing 64-bit Windows applications


• Working knowledge of XML-RPC, SOAP, or other web service technologies
