Position Description

Senior Systems Administrator

Responsibilities:
  • Monitor System i server performance and availability
  • Install PTFs, cume and group packages
  • Monitor servers for hardware failures (disk, power supplies, IOA, etc)
  • Perform nightly backups using BRMS
  • Assist with special projects supporting business objectives.
  • Perform software upgrades including OS version release upgrades


Qualifications:
  • High School education or equivalent; college degree in Computer Science or technical equivalent preferred
  • Three to five years experience as a system i administrator
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of i5/OS
  • Thorough understanding of IBM PTFs and cume packages
  • Thorough knowledge of CL Programming
  • Thorough knowledge of backup and recovery procedures using BRMS
  • Thorough knowledge of Mimix for i5/OS.
  • Thorough knowledge of work management, performance tuning and capacity planning.
  • Experience using the HMC in a multi-partition environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of HTTP web serving configuration, Virtual Hosts, DNS, Network Address Translation.
  • Experience with ODBC/JDBC, connection pooling and external database connections to i5/OS.
  • Experience with DDM and DRDA
  • Knowledge of server virtualization switchable hardware, independent ASPs, clustering, remote journals is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to set targets, design improvement plans and ascertain best approach methodologies
  • Good interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to be assertive, diplomatic and tactful with a diverse population group
  • Good collaboration skills with the ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Additional requirements:
  • 24x7 on call support at least one month per year
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs waist high, crawl on and under raised floors, run network and system cabling when needed
