About the Job

Vigor Marine
Shipyard Supervisors
Portland, OR
October 12, 2009

Vigor Industrial LLC is a thriving West Coast provider of innovative industrial services with services that range from ship repair to specialty coatings to water treatment.  Our dynamic operations are united by a focus on quality craftsmanship, respect for each individual, and dedication to the task at hand.  Vigor Industrial is committed to working in a safe and environmentally-responsible manner.  Vigor facilities are located in Everett, Bremerton and Port Angeles, WA; Portland, OR; and Alameda, CA.

Vigor Marine is one of six companies in the Vigor Industrial family.  We are a fast paced, highly successful ship repair company.  Our creative, flexible style allows for individual solutions to unique customer needs.  We are equally comfortable responding to an emergency repair job as we are executing a multi-year maintenance agreement.  With West Coast-wide operations, Vigor Marine’s projects range from voyage repair to complex dry-dockings.

If you have an extensive hands on background in commercial ship repair, this could be for you.  We are adding to our dynamic and innovative team a Shipyard Supervisor.  This is a working supervisor position.

As a Supervisor you will be responsible for supervising craft specific work in the shipyard across multiple projects.  Project oversight involves planning all aspects of an assigned project(s).  Additionally you may have responsibility for overseeing the work of lower level supervisors.  You must be self-disciplined, resourceful, and willing to accept responsibility for the assigned crafts and projects.

Required Background and Skills:
• Commercial ship repair experience equivalent to a master-level craftsperson (must have a welding, pipefitting, scaffolding, machinist, rigging or electrical background as it relates to commercial ship repair)
• 4 years effective lead or supervisory experience in commercial ship repair
• Hands on knowledge of marine-related equipment, ship repair and construction techniques
• Knowledge of shipyard safety practices; complex mathematical principles as applied to shipping activities
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and clients
• Read, understand and apply ship repair specifications, blue prints, technical procedures, and regulations
• Identify problems and re-chart to correct; direct, coach and motivate the work of others; resolve conflicts
• Ability to operate a personal computer and various PC applications; word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
• Using tools as required for accomplishing the work

Work Environment Requirements:  The physical demands for this position involve the ability to maneuver in a shipyard as needed to oversee the accomplishment of work.  Requires extensive walking and standing; some climbing, crouching, twisting and stooping.  May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment.  Work is predominately performed outside or on board ships in all weather conditions.  Use of tools requires manual dexterity and fine motor movement.  The work environment for this job is demanding and potentially hazardous due to work on or inside ships as well as travel around ship repair yard.  Must also be able to work long hours, travel via various modes of transportation, and work any day of the week at any time of the day as required to meet customer needs, business objectives and to achieve delivery of service deadlines.

Relocation assistance available for the qualified candidate.  We provide competitive Union Wages, strong benefits package and 401k.
