JOB SUMMARY:
The Shop Floor Leader is accountable to help facilitate the successful management of the company shop. All actions will be in support of increasing line of business satisfaction, lowering the cost of repairs, and increasing equipment availability. This includes effectively working with the Shop Manager, managing the shop in his/her absence, and training to become a Shop Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Reinforce and demonstrate Schneider’s core values and in so doing, support Schneider’s Union Free philosophy. This includes supporting and leading Schneider’s core value of safety first and always. Addressing any unsafe behaviors, auditing for safety compliance, and ensuring all visitors in the shop are safe. May include taking the lead on the safety team.
2. Accountable for equipment availability and repair decisions for fleet units. This includes communication with the Line of Business to understand the business needs in order to maximize the equipment availability and prioritize the work.
3. On the job (live) work order audits and performance audits of associates. This includes giving performance feedback during the audit on the floor, ensuring the associates are using the checklists, and reinforcing the Schneider established work processes.
4. Assign work to associates, matching the skill needed to complete the task to the associate who appropriately has that skill.
5. Develop associates’ skills. Ensure that everyone has completed their training on-time including vendor based training.
6. Audit the work of the shop champions. Ensure that they are being effective in their roles and leading those efforts in the shop.
7. Support the Shop Manager in enforcing parts processes. This includes inventory controls, meeting parts key factors, maintaining appropriate inventory, ensuring accuracy of cycle counts, and reinforcing the use of Schneider parts processes with associates.
8. Support the Shop Manager in controlling the level of tire spend in the shop. This includes ensuring that proper tire stances are being followed in the shop, supporting the tire champion, and reinforcing Schneider tire processes with associates.
9. Appropriately maintain vendor relationships. This includes managing what work gets vended, ensuring quality of the vended work, performing follow up when needed, and managing the costs associated with vended work.
10. Responsible for regular communication with associates to include sharing the team’s performance metrics, and corporate updates.
11. Help to set performance goals both for the shop as a whole and for individuals. Help create and execute action plans associated with those goals.
12. Complete performance assessments of associates that include Performance Assessments (PA), Business Partnerships (BP), and Individual Development Plans (IDP).
13. Responsible for quickly addressing performance related problems. This could include disciplinary action, administering Performance Improvement Plans (PIP), or termination.
14. Resolve associate issues appropriately and timely.
15. Responsible for the accuracy of payroll submissions.
16. Manage associate schedules (vacations, time off, hours)
17. Give goal –oriented recognition to the associates.
18. Ensure shop tooling is working and that associates have the tools they need to perform their job
19. Annually, assist Shop Manager with completing focal merit review for associates.
20. Support the shop staffing plan by working with recruiters, conducting interviews, coming to consensus, making offers, giving start dates, and on-boarding new associates. Attend college career fairs when appropriate.
21. When appropriate, prepare for and participate in Fair and Equitable boards.
22. Use Manager Self Service as a tool to make associate changes (pay, shift, hire, term)
23. Required to work a minimum of one weekend day (Sat or Sun) shift per month
EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Shop Leadership experience a major plus
- Ability to organize and multi-task
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Solid analytical skills
- College degree and/or 4 years of relevant transportation experience
