Purpose: The Whole-Building and Community Integration (WBCI) Research Group in the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center (BTRIC) in the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Solar R&D staff member as part of an expanding renewable integration program. BTRIC focuses on four main areas: 1) research and development of new materials, components and systems technologies for energy efficiency in buildings, 2) whole-building and community integration (energy efficiency, renewable energy, and to grid), 3) improved energy management in existing buildings and industrial facilities during their operational phase, and 4) market transformations from old to new in all of these areas. Candidates will have the opportunity to work with experienced staff and utilize BTRIC’s wealth of experimental facilities, which have been designated as a Department of Energy (DOE) National User Facility. This Center is a recognized focal point for addressing technical problems confronting the U.S. buildings industry. Candidates will also have a close working relationship with the ETSD Power and Energy Systems group.Major Duties/Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:
• Work independently and with other researchers on projects related to solar technologies and their integration with energy storage, electric vehicles, and other sustainable technologies (appliances, HVAC equipment, envelope systems) in residential and commercial buildings, and their interaction with the grid,
• Lead and manage technical R&D projects related to integrating solar technologies,
• Collaborate with research staff and partner organizations such as solar manufacturers, distributors, installers, and other laboratories on future research initiatives related to solar technologies,
• Network with internal organizations such as the Material Science and Technology and the Measurement Science and Systems Engineering Divisions, and external organizations such as solar manufacturers,
• Interact with existing DOE sponsors and potential new sponsors in pursuit of new and additional research funding,
• Develop and assist with developing new research proposals to DOE,
• As needed, mentor new employees, post-graduate hires (post-masters and post-docs), and students,
• Present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical society meetings such as the American Solar Energy Society, and
• Develop and maintain strong relationships through active participation in solar industry organizations and events.
Qualifications Required: Position requires a M.S. or Ph.D. in electrical engineering with 5 to 12 years of relevant professional experience.
Knowledge of solar technologies, power systems, codes and standards, and energy storage devices is required.
Demonstrated proficiency in solar technologies and photovoltaics-grid interface experience is required.
Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications/journal articles, and project plans.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership.
