Job Description:

Meridian Academy is an urban, progressive, independent, secondary school in Brookline, MA. and a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools ( http://www.essentialschools.org ). This year, we serve sixth through eleventh graders and will complete our growth to grades six through twelve next year. Spanish class sizes are 12 or fewer students. The school has 40 students this year as it grows to its final size of 100 students.

Meridian’s curriculum is interdisciplinary and project-based. We are small and have a flexible schedule that adjusts to support each course and to serve students' learning needs. Classes use all of greater Boston as an extended resource. Students take three core subjects in which student problem-posing and strong basic skills are the starting point for long-term original research and learning: Spanish; Humanities; and Mathematics, Science, and Technology. All teachers are expected to bring a liberal arts perspective to the different disciplines that they teach. We are looking for an experienced educator to join our staff.

Meridian is seeking a part-time Spanish teacher to teach two sections of Spanish (with the possibility of an expanded role in subsequent years)
and to work with our other Spanish teacher further developing the foundations for our seven-year world language curriculum.

 Responsibilities/opportunities include:

  • Teaching two classes and a total of no more than 24 students.
  • Emphasizing the development of oral communication skills in Spanish.
  • Creating activities that help students develop academic skills, make connections between ideas, master essential knowledge, and grow in their curiosity and creativity.
  • Developing and implementing methods of assessment that accurately reflect each student's progress with skills, content, and habits of mind.
  • Using the broader resources of Boston and its environs as an extended classroom.
  • Working with teachers of all disciplines, the students, and the broader community to develop the curriculum (both the formal classroom experiences and overall school culture).

Qualifications:

  • Preferred: Two or more years teaching Spanish at the secondary level.
  • A bachelor's degree (or minor) in a related discipline. A master's degree is preferred.
  • A flexible and energetic personality that can work productively in a changing and growing school environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills when working with diverse students and families. Ability to participate in shared decision-making that invites everyone to contribute to the improvement of the school.
