About the Job

Kennedy Child Study Center’s mission is to assist young children experiencing significant difficulty in critical areas of early childhood development such as cognition and learning, mobility, speech and communication, and social relations.  We have an immediate need for a Pre-School Special Education Teacher at our Bronx school. The teacher will be responsible for the planning and implementation of all educational goals and objectives of assigned children as well as for overall classroom management and safety.

 

The Special Education Teacher will formulate and implement the goals of the Individualized Education Program for each child by planning and providing instruction on developmentally appropriate activities.  S/he will be responsible for classroom management and ensuring a safe and appropriate classroom environment, including assuming personal responsibility for the health and safety of each assigned child.  The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for the supervision and direction of teacher assistants in the classroom, including writing annual evaluations and notifying the Director of Pre-School of any personnel issues.  S/he will be expected to serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team that ensures the welfare of children and attends meetings, as directed, and maintains accurate and up-to-date records concerning each child in the classroom. 

 

The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively and positively with the parents/guardians of assigned children and work collaboratively with other team members.  S/he should be able to maintain an orderly and attractive classroom setting, including keeping equipment and materials in good condition and requesting repair or replacement when necessary.  S/he will be able to follow approved teaching methodologies as designated by the Director of Pre-School.  The Special Education Teacher should be skilled in evaluation and assessment of students’ needs and possess strong teaching, planning, and problem-solving skills along with solid written and verbal communication skills.  The successful candidate will be eager to seek professional growth by maintaining current knowledge and skills pertinent to the position.  S/he will have a demonstrated creative ability and possess a supportive, positive, and patient attitude towards children.

 

Qualifications for the position include: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree. A Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education preferred.  New York State Students with Disabilities (Birth - grade 2) certification is required.
