Sr. Investments Accountant

Position Description:

 

Symetra's Banking and Investment Services department currently has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Investments  Accountant to join their Investment Accounting Operation team! This person will be responsible for accounting and compliance for Symetra's investment portfolios. The successful candidate in this role will ensure timely and accurate accounting for fixed investments, equity investments, and other invested assets, as well as provide guidance and review the work of the investment accountants. Detailed responsibilities include:

  • Prepare financial reports associated with investment portfolios for GAAP and Statutory accounting - reporting and disclosure.

  • Implement/oversee compliance and operational procedures for investment accounting and keep abreast of changes to investment regulations

 

  • Oversee Investment departments compliance with key controls established within sox framework, support efforts to establish additional controls as required by the Statutory Model Audit Rule and lead and support all internal audits related to Sox and year end updates of related narratives and SAS 70 reviews.

 

  • Perform monthly/quarterly closing process for the investment accounting group.

  • Analyze & explain overall changes in the investment income and investment asset base and provide support to actuarial and financial reporting departments

 

  • Assist in research for ensuring proper accounting treatment for various investments

  • Partner with product lines, financial reporting, actuarial units and co-workers within Investment Accounting to develop new business processes

Qualifications:

 

To be considered further, candidates will possess the following skills/qualifications:

 

  • Accounting degree and/or equivalent experience, CPA a plus
  • Minimum of four years progressive accounting experience
  • Proven record of success performing senior-level accounting and analysis
  • Insurance accounting and/or public accounting experience preferred
  • Knowledge of fixed income/equity securities
  • Strong accounting skills
  • Good financial analysis skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Strong computer skills - Excel and ACCESS
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
  • Ability to work effectively as part of finance area team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of insurance/financial services accounting and statutory accounting desirable, but not required
