The Laboratory Technician, Coatings is primarily responsible for application testing of Pigment Black (PB) samples in coating formulations, and supporting the professional positions associated with these products. He/she independently coordinates and in many instances conducts testing with a low level of direct supervision. A Laboratory Technician develops simple new test procedures or refines and modifies existing test procedures, and has responsibility for insuring that the test procedures used are accurate, repeatable, and that the data being reported is correct. He/she also must maintain control test logs of the various test methods to insure the accuracy of the test results being produced.
Application testing will be carried out in a variety of coating systems, i.e. solvent, water-borne, UV etc. The Lab Technician is also involved in inter-laboratory crosschecks with other labs. Proper documentation in the given project database system and the ability to write quality internal and external laboratory reports is mandatory.
The Laboratory Technician responds to customer inquiries and requests from manufacturing in the absence of technical professionals. The Laboratory Technician must be competent in running tests across a spectrum of industries including tire, mechanical rubber goods, plastic, ink and adhesives industries with a variety of analytical tests, mechanical tests, formulation and mixing functions, various microscopy techniques, color and optical testing and so forth. The Technician is familiar with and capable of running a variety of tests within multiple disciplines.
Education/Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in chemical or physical science with 3-5 years of coatings or other formulation background is preferred. A high school diploma or GED with at least 15 years experience in an industrial or academic chemical or physical laboratory setting with a strong background in supporting a professional staff with various laboratory tests is also acceptable.
A strong sense of safe working practices and working with standard test methods is desired. The incumbent should also have a general understanding and possess the ability to use simple statistical tools in evaluating test results. Technician should also have the experience and ability to oversee the work of junior members of the laboratory staff and have the ability to train new members of the staff in the use of various standard test methods used in the various laboratories.
Good computer skills, very good communication skills (oral and written), problem solving/instrument troubleshooting skills and mechanical aptitude are required.
The incumbent should have the ability to discern color and shade differences between samples
The incumbent should have a fundamental understanding of formulations and test methods. Knowledge of application methods is a plus. The ability to prepare test panels via spray gun is also desired.
