Position Description:
Enterprise Architect

The Enterprise Architect is a role within the R&D IT department of bioMérieux. The incumbent will take bioMerieux’s R&D and business strategy and define the IT systems architecture to support that strategy. He/she will apply his/her knowledge in enterprise architecture (and the varying technology platforms available) in realizing the business goals of R&D IT and of bioMerieux as a whole.

As an expert, the Enterprise Architect provides technical leadership and guidance, and applies his/her knowledge and experience in planning and supervising the technical aspects of multiple R&D projects/products. He/she will integrate an overall system architecture perspective into the solution leading to marketable commercial products. This role is a key resource in solving a wide variety of problems encountered in the definition, design, development and support of medical instruments and their components and architectures. The incumbent will provide direction to the architecture team in North America and interface with the architecture team in Europe. He/she will have an indirect reporting relationship to the global manager of enterprise architecture (presently in Europe).

An Enterprise Architect provides technical leadership and vision to his/her colleagues. He/she researches and establishes architectural solutions that meet bioMerieux’s business needs. He/she leads the team to establish architectural integrity and technology standards for the organization. He/she communicates these architectures and associated technologies to all teams, and ensures that each team is applying the architectures and technologies correctly. Communication is a key skill; self-confidence is a must. The enterprise architect has to talk to both technical developers and business managers and must be able to communicate effectively with both.


Position Requirements:
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITES

An Enterprise Architect’s accountabilities include but not limited to:

· Advises management on appropriate architectures to achieve business goals and strategy.
· Advises the technical staff and oversees the work of the software/technical architects on the use of appropriate architectures and technologies
· Leads the architecture team to establish architectural standards and technical guidelines for North America in consultation with the European team and the manager of the global architecture team.
· Interfaces with other organizations (e.g. other R&D departments, the Information Systems Department, Commercial Operations) to ensure the best technical and systems choices are made to support the business processes.
· Ensures consistency of architectural and technical solutions across projects. Ensures that technical choices made across R&D systems and commercial systems are synchronized.
· Arbitrates between different project teams to determine best overall system architecture.
· Mentors team members in design, technology, and processes.
· Provide his/her leadership with schedule information, timely status, and design input.
· Mentors team members in object-oriented design, system design, and database design.
· Optionally, manages the architecture team in North America as people manager.

KNOWLEDGE:

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
· BS in Computer Science or related engineering discipline. MS / graduate degree strongly preferred.
· 14+ years of IT experience with progressively increasing levels of technical responsibility.
· At least 8 years of experience as a software/systems architect, with 3 years experience as an enterprise architect in an organization of at least equivalent size and complexity. Demonstrated experience with cutting edge of enterprise software, EAI and SOA. Past experience dealing with technology standards and governance issues.
· 3+ years experience with software and system integration involving various approaches, including service based approaches (e.g. SOAP, REST, WOA). Solid experience in solving of complex integration problems that involve the use of middleware.
· Extensive knowledge and 10+ years experience with relational database design. Data warehousing and data mining is strongly desired.
· Multiple years of experience dealing with system design issues such as infrastructure design, OS choices, capacity planning, server sizing, transaction severs, server mirroring and load balancing, fault-tolerance, data integrity etc.
· At least 2 years of experience with ERP solutions or interfacing with an ERP system. Prior SAP experience strongly preferred.
· At least 8 years of experience in a J2EE environment, including experience dealing with application servers. Extensive knowledge and experience with OO design and mentoring (e.g. understanding to architectural and design patterns). Ability to mentor team members in applying UML to OO design initiatives.
· Experience with multiple development methodologies (waterfall, spiral, iterative). Good understanding and experience in the use of agile methodologies required.
· Ability to mentor team members in applying software development processes to assigned tasks.
· Ability to mentor team members in design patterns.
· Ability to lead and mentor junior developers.
· Superior written and verbal communication skills.
· Excellent leadership and negotiation skills.
· Ability to work cross-site and cross-culturally.
· Prior experience as a consultant
· Prior management experience is a plus.
· Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech or medical device industry preferred. Knowledge of FDA Design controls is a plus.

For individuals with prior management experience and a desire to manage in the future, the person may be the manager of the 3-5-person architecture team as well.
