Description:
Directly responsible for income tax accounting and the preparation of the income tax returns and related reports to ensure American Water compliance with all financial reporting requirements and tax laws and regulations. Also responsible for the development and implementation of corporate tax strategy to minimize tax cost to American Water while ensuring compliance with statutory tax laws.
Responsible for tax amounts in Financial Statements, including final review and sign-off of income tax related financial statement footnotes and other disclosures prior to final submission.
Responsible for final review and sign-offs of federal and state income tax returns, prior to submission to authorities.
Responsible for tax amounts in corporate financial forecast and cash flow projections.
Coordinate or lead negotiations with the IRS and other statutory authorities to settle outstanding tax audit and legislation issues.
Monitor tax legislative changes and ensure appropriate tax positions and processes that reflect the changes.
Build and lead a high performance team. This requires setting expectations with team, reviewing their work, coaching and training team members. Mentor staff members to ensure proper technical understanding of department’s goals, methodology and approach. Also mentor individuals in career development, project assignments, training opportunities, and understanding of American Water as a business. Actively liaise and promote teamwork with Shared Services and all other expert finance organizations within American Water, including Corporate and States.

Requirements:
In-depth knowledge of federal, state and local tax laws.
FAS 109 technical skills, including the operational application to tax accounting reporting requirements.
Working knowledge of tax department software.
Working knowledge of SOX compliant controls.
Utility industry experience a plus.
MS in Taxation preferred.
