Sr Quality Engineer

Job Description:
Basic Function
This engineer's main objective is to successfully identify and complete quality improvement projects that support strategic objectives and have a strong impact upon Kohler Company Sanitary platform business results.

Under the general direction of Manager Quality Engineering, this engineer will function primarily as a technical project leader, advisor, and/or owner for projects focused on quality improvements within the Sanitary platform.

Specific Responsibilities
As needed, identify, lead, coach, facilitate, and/or participate in quality improvement projects to support strategic objectives. This includes project planning, day-to-day project management, data analysis, and reporting.
Drive and facilitate all aspects of quality and manufacturing system improvement activities.
Support Engineering in the New Product Development (NPD) process. This includes correctly identifying Key Characteristics, assessing and developing and documenting appropriate controls, assessing manufacturability and process effectiveness.
Analyze product field failure products and data for root cause identification and elimination.
Coordinate product containment activities, warranty data and product failure, establish investigation and analysis methods, and implement corrective actions.

Relationships and Contacts
Supervisory Relationships:
Reports to the Manager, Quality Engineering, PA.
Mentors, coaches, and/or advises less experienced Quality/ Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians.
Operates independently with minimal guidance from managers and/or senior staff.

Organizational Relationships:
Frequent contact with Customers, Customer Service, and Customer Support Engineers regarding customer satisfaction feedback and improvement.
Frequent contact with B-Team and other Senior Management regarding quality improvement strategy, product and product enhancements, selection/progress of improvement projects, and other improvement activities.
Frequent contact with K&B Americas Vitreous and Toilet Seat Plants, Manufacturing Engineering, and Design Engineering regarding capability and manufacturability of designs, capability of processes, and selection of improvement projects.

External Relationships:
Frequent contact with customers, distributors, contractors, and end consumers regarding product performance.
Occasional investigative visits to distributors, job, and homeowner sites.
Occasional contact with suppliers to assess and improve process capability and controls.

Skill Level

  • Performs assignments of a complicated nature requiring a high degree of business and technical acumen, interpersonal skills, and problem solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze current business state, identify/execute quality improvement projects, and achieve quality objectives.
  • Sought after problem solving resource for technical projects and team leadership
  • Leads cross functional teams to resolve complex technical or business problems. Provides program management, coaching, and benchmarking as appropriate.
  • Effectively drives and leverages implementation of improvements across organizational boundaries.
  • Appropriately assesses and recommends assumption of risk for short term or strategic concerns.
  • Effectively justifies strategies and action plans under critical review.

    Education and Experience
    Bachelor of Science Degree in an Engineering or scientific discipline, previous experience in quality engineering, manufacturing systems or processes related technologies. Past results include successful technical leadership on projects and/or programs with a significant financial impact required. Previous experience in effectively implementing, maintaining, and auditing quality systems required. Excellent problem solving and project management skills, good oral and written communication skills, and strong computer skills are required. Skilled in the application of advanced statistical methods, program management techniques, and quality system development. Advanced certification in Six Sigma, Shainin, or other advanced problem solving methodology strongly desired. Recognition by ASQ as a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), or Certified Quality Manager (CQM) also desired.
