Job Title

  • Sr. R&D Formulation Scientist


Position Description

  • This position is responsible for the developing and formulating of new product lines in conjunction with guidelines established by the Marketing Department, International Department or the Product Development Committee.


Position Responsibilities

  • Develops new and/or improved product formulas, packages or manufacturing procedures in conjunction with guidelines established by the Marketing Department, International Department or the Product Development Committee.
  • Writes and/or reviews procedures, protocols and specifications needed to support product development activities.
  • Develops and/or performs all testing requirements on new formulas and packages.
  • Ensures that assigned projects are executed in a manner, which is compliant with all regulatory guidelines.
  • Documents test results, specifications and procedures in a standard format for inclusion in the Drug Master File.
  • Participates in the technology transfer from pilot scale to full-up production.
  • Keeps the Manager, R&D abreast of the financial impact of formulating, sourcing or manufacturing issues related to assigned projects.
  • Communicates, in a timely fashion, all information regarding formulation, project status, costing, results, etc. to all appropriate individuals, keeping in mind the confidentiality requirements.
  • Conducts intellectual searches for technical or clinical information through a variety of resources, including the Internet.
  • Explores new technologies and materials, which may have application for product lines.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends, practices, developments and regulatory changes, which would impact products, procedures or packaging.
  • Identifies vendors and other outside research organizations to assist R & D in the completion of projects, as approved by management.
  • Ensures the maintenance and/or adherence to good laboratory practices and all safety regulations.
  • Strengthens the R & D Department by contributing innovative ideas, expertise, knowledge, high professional standards, team spirit and pride in the Company.
  • Provides technical knowledge in guiding other chemists in the R & D Lab.
  • Develops and presents to the Manager, R& D matters requiring his/her decision.
  • Participates in scheduled Product Development meetings in the absence of the Manager, R & D.
  • Ensures that confidential procedures are strictly adhered to at all times.

Position Requirements

  • A B.S. in chemistry or related discipline; or equivalent in training and experience.  M.S. is preferred.
  • The knowledge and skills required for this position are typically acquired in 7+ years experience in a pharmaceutical or related healthcare industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in developing lotions, ointments, creams, gels, liquid, and balm products is required.  Experience with SPF, Active Ingredients and FDA regulations is critical. 
  • A broad understanding of physical and chemical properties of chemicals, OSHA regulations, CGMP and GLP.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of standard principles and practices in an R & D environment (manufacturing operations preferred).
  • Ability to understand and interpret MSDS reports.
  • High degree of familiarity with instruments used in an R & D laboratory.
  • Ability to work independently on concurrent projects assigned.
  • Excellent laboratory and research skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with internal and external customers.
  • Good leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft programs including (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with internal and external customers, function as a team player, accept constructive criticism from management and comply with Company policies.
  • Physical demands include standing up 75% of the time and a combination of sitting, writing, analyzing and calculating 25% of the time.
