Job Description:
The Server Engineer position will be responsible for maintaining industry and government IT compliance via scheduled deployments, patch management and maintenance, configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Windows Servers 2003/2000 and 2008, Windows XP and Vista, Terminal Servers, Citrix, and Linux systems. This position focuses on ensuring production systems are secure and tuned for optimum performance, delivering required information to end-users, and interacting properly with other systems. The Server Engineer will interface with other stakeholders and attend meetings, generate reports, and provide recommendations for enhancements and improvements as needed. This position reports to the on-site Operations Management.

Responsibilities:
• Build, configure, and maintain Citrix Presentation Server farms, Linux servers, and Windows 2000/20003 servers and domain controllers.
• Perform OS building, configuration, Security template development, GPO development and Pushes, SMS and troubleshooting for major hardware and software platforms.
• Design, deploy, maintain and troubleshoot MS servers, MS Clusters and NAS interfaces in an Active Directory environment.
• Collaborate with other server engineers, users and client managers in identifying requirements, specifications and project planning activities.
• Provide recommendations regarding standardization, sizing and costs for server purchases.
• Review support issues, functionality changes and requirements for servers.
• Plan and provide for updating operating system software to comply with vendor support and migration criteria.
• Monitor daily system backups and ensure data replication to disaster/recovery sites.
• Develop and verify restoration of backup.
• Assist in the development of provisioning hardware specs, evaluate advanced technologies, and make recommendations on server infrastructure design to government client.
• Provide integration support in conjunction with Application Support teams and others within our government agency.
• Perform monthly critical patch updates
• Maintain server security in compliance with the government agency Security Standards
• Create Standard Operating Procedures and “how-to” technical documents.
• Consolidation/Standardization: Working with government management, Application Support Teams, and other groups throughout the government agency identify, plan, and implement consolidation of standardized server hardware and software resources across the government agency where appropriate
• Monitor server hardware OS issues/performance via server monitoring tools such as Solar Winds and SiteScope.
• Provide 24/7 On Call Engineer support on a weekly basis. On Call engineer is designated as “first contact” for server issues.
• Manage Antivirus updates on all servers in cooperation with vendors and Application Support teams.
• Troubleshoot hardware/software issues on server platforms.
• Facilitate Application Support teams’ efforts with their installations, upgrades, changes, etc.
• Maintain server warranty/licensing status.
• Plan roadmap for future server hardware, software platforms.
• Provide day to day management and administration support for network resources such as user accounts, rights, shares, printing, and password maintenance.
• Test, install, tune, environment hardware, software, peripherals, and services.
• Build and maintain lab environments.
• Provide support for start-ups, shutdowns, test runs, and emergency operations
• Assist as required to support COOP/DR plans.
• Assign, remove, restrict NTFS permissions
• Perform directory structure and file management on regional file systems
• Serve as a senior level resource with minimal direction from Operations Managers and/or PM.
• Work in an Integrated Project Team (ITP) environment requiring interaction with other contract personnel outside of company and non-technical users.
• Coordinate systems, software and hardware integration with other departments and vendors.
• Coordinate Site and Field Office support.
• Perform in a fast-paced environment where project deadlines are critical and multiple projects run in parallel.
• Expert level documentation of problems and resolutions for Tier I and Tier II technicians
• Provide guidance at the enterprise level for future direction of the backup environment

Required Skills and Experience:
• 5 years hands on experience in the design and deployment of servers in a Microsoft Active Directory environment.
• 3 years of general troubleshooting/desk side support in a Windows environment
• Experience with and knowledge of working issues within the CA Service Desk
• Minimum 5-8 years experience in a production high-availability data center environment.
• Familiar with Server Security Policy configurations, scripting, GPO, Hyena and Shavlik deployments.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Advanced knowledge of MS Windows, MS Active Directory, MS Exchange 2003, NetBackup UltraBackup, Datacenter and Network Appliance NAS Storage equipment.
• Remedy ticketing reporting system experience.
• Work experience with UNIX hardware operating systems desirable.
• Work in a fast paced environment with minimal direction.
• Must have good team, organizational and planning skills and stringent time management skills to balance dynamic workloads in a complex environment
• Must be able to work independently and concurrently on multiple project tasks.
• Excellent problem solving/root cause analysis skills required.
• Experience with multiple server hardware platforms and operating systems.
• (BlackBerry, Symantec, Linux/UNIX) installation, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance.
• Understand networking technology at the physical (twisted pair, fiber optic) and logical (Ethernet, TCP/IP) level including the various supporting services and protocols (DNS, LDAP, NTLM, Kerberos, SMB, AFP)
• Experience with Remote Server/Desktop, SMS 2003 deployment, patching and reporting.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Visio.
• Experience with enterprise data backup systems, enterprise data storage (NAS/SAN) systems.
• Experience in technical projects, vendor coordination and collaboration with IT personnel to accomplish projects on time and within budget.
• Knowledge of Windows Server 2000/2003 OS and Active Directory design required.
• Knowledge of Windows Server 2000/2003 AD Administration (user account management, rights assignments, etc.).
• Experience with operation of master console software such as NetApp ONTAP, Dell IT Assistant, and NetIQ DRA.
• Experience providing problem-solving services to network engineers and users
• Working Knowledge of MS SQL Server
• Working Knowledge of Microsoft IIS
• Knowledge of Citrix product line, including Presentation Server (XenApp) 4.0/4.5, Password Manager, Citrix Access Gateway/Secure Gateway, Citrix Easy Call, 3rd-party print Citrix-specific drivers (thinprint), and Netscaler/Wanscaler
• CA Unicenter, Service Desk and DSM 11.x helpful
• Knowledge of NetIQ AD Management products strongly preferred (GPA, DRA, and DSA).
• Knowledge of EMC, Network Appliance storage platforms required.
• Knowledge of various backup technologies required. These include: Backup Exec, Backup Express, and ArcServe
• Knowledge of Network Management systems such as Solar Winds Orion, SiteScope, and What’s Up Gold required.
• Knowledge of Patch management products required, notably PatchLink.
• User-level knowledge of Lotus Notes, MS Project, and MS Visio

Desired Skills and Experience:
• Dell/HP blade experience is a plus.
• Work experience in the installation and troubleshooting of MS SQL, Citrix, Oracle or any Relational DBMS is desirable.
• Experience in a Government contracting environment is preferable.
• Advanced Netbackup 6.5 troubleshooting; provide expert (Tier III) knowledge in managing a large Netbackup 6.5 environment
• Lead implementation of backup to disk with tiered replication using new Data Domain hardware

Required Education and Certifications:
• Microsoft Certified Professional or MCSE
• Formal Computer Associates Instructor Lead Training

Desired Education and Certifications:
• Microsoft Certifications are a plus (MSCE, 2003).
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, MIS or related technical degree desirable.
