Job Title: Senior Software Engineer I

Job Description:

The Space and Environmental Mission Systems (SEMS) Raytheon team is responsible for full life cycle engineering on state of the art environmental, commercial, and sensing systems for government and commercial applications. Our projects include National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Earth Observation Systems (EOS), and many other exciting programs. A couple of example programs are described below.

The NPOESS program is the nation's next-generation meteorological satellite system. Raytheon is part of the Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems NPOESS team and is responsible for development of the NPOESS ground segments including satellite command & control and environmental data processing. Raytheon's contribution to the NPOESS program will make possible more accurate and timely global weather and environmental data production. The NPOESS Command, Control, and Communications Segment (C3S) software provides a highly automated and integrated suite of eight subsystems at the new NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF), including Mission Planning & Scheduling, Satellite Command & Telemetry, Satellite Memory Management, Orbital Operations, Ground System Automation, Enterprise Management, and Data Monitoring and Recovery. The NPOESS Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) ingests raw data from the four NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) satellite sensors and generates more than 25 environmental data products required for vital weather analyses and forecasts to support military operations, civil applications and scientific research. The IDPS software system provides a highly automated and integrated suite of six software subsystems: Infrastructure, Data Management, Ingest, Processing, Data Delivery and Data Quality Monitoring.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) mission is the follow-on to the very successful Hubble Space Telescope mission. A goal of JWST is to observe the first stars and galaxies of the universe and to answer fundamental questions that have been posed to NASA such as:

What is the shape of the universe?

How do galaxies evolve?

What is dark matter?

How do stars and planetary systems form and interact?

Raytheon is part of the contractor team for JWST and is responsible for development, deployment, and maintenance of the Common Command & Telemetry System (CCTS) to all JWST integration & test users as complete turn-key systems. There are 46 planned systems to be deployed at 18 locations including Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Northrup Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS) - prime contractor, US Sensor Labs, European Space Agency (ESA) Sensor Labs, and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) Sensor Labs
