About the Job

AvalonBay Communities Inc., an award winning national real estate investment trust (REIT) that develops, builds, and manages multi-family housing, is seeking a professional, dynamic seasoned auditor to join our Internal Audit Team. The position will be responsible for effectively assessing risk and evaluating financial and operational processes and functions for the presence of proper internal controls, efficient operations, and good business practices. The Staff Auditor will also serve as an advocate for the ethical and values based culture at AvalonBay.

  •  Conduct all duties, tasks and functions with the proficiency, due professional care and ethical standards of the IIA's Professional Practices Framework
  • Contribute to and be an advocate for the ethical and values based culture at AvalonBay
  • Develop and implement Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance documentation, reviews and procedures
  • Develop and implement risk based audit programs
  • Effectively evaluate financial and operational internal controls throughout the company
  • Incorporate evolving forms of value added internal audit activity that are consistent with the IIA's Professional Practices Framework
  • Improve the effectiveness and efficiency of company processes and operations
  • Document and evaluate financial, operational and compliance policies and procedures
  • Effectively communicate results of audits, reviews and assignments in a verbal and written format
  • Partner with the company's external auditors to increase department effectiveness and efficiency and reduce outside provider expenses
  • Build, maintain and continually enhance working relationships within the company
  • Assist Internal Audit management implement the duties and responsibilities of the department

 Qualified candidates will posses the following:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Strong customer service attitude and interpersonal skills
  • Able to effectively manage people and projects
  • Able to travel as needed and meet the physical demands of the position
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to changing priorities and responsibilities
  • One or more years of work experience in the audit/accounting field is required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited business school
  • CPA or CIA designation is preferred
