About the Job
Stephen Gaynor School an independent special education school on the West Side of Manhattan seeks a Physical Education Teacher for students ages 5 through 14 who have learning differences.
SCOPE OF POSITION:
Under general supervision, teaches classes in the field of Physical Education to students ages 5 to 14, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment in which learning and personal growth can take place in accordance with each student's ability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teaches knowledge and skills in physical education to elementary/secondary students.
• Demonstrates and explains basic sports skills, imparts knowledge and strategies for formal sports, games, and fundamentals of body movement and motor gross skills.
• Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of the students to the extent feasible.
• Exhibits proper conduct in the handling of student and school emergencies.
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior required to provide an orderly and productive environment.
• Instructs students in proper care and storage of equipment and controls use of and storage of materials and equipment.
• Provides progress reports that evaluate and reflect each student’s performance and growth.
• Communicates with parents, teachers and administrators about student progress.
• Participates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities.
• Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's Degree
EXPERIENCE:
Student teaching, internship, or full-time teaching experience in the field of physical education
