Supervises, schedules, trains, counsels and evaluates assigned personnel, works with appropriate individuals in resolving personnel related matters. Develops, implements and assures continued safe work practices in the laboratories and other station areas in which hazardous/regulated chemicals are stored and used.


 


  • Reviews and evaluates bid specifications, proposals and contractor reports pertaining to laboratory activities and analysis.

  • Maintains a thorough level of knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations new, proposed and current.

  • Fiduciary responsibility.

  • Interface with work groups outside the station as required.
    Support and follow processes of the Duke Energy Coal Fleet Operating Model

  • Responsible for all station water chemistry activities and equipment.

  • Actively manages the inventory of NH3 used for injection into the station's SCR's.

  • Provides advanced technical expertise and guidance for the resolution of station chemistry/water treatment/sampling problems.

  • Develops plans to improve safety, regulatory compliance, unit availability, reliability, and performance.

  • Performs work in an office environment; required to observe work in all areas of generating facilities which are power plant, industrial environments operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which includes exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity. 

  • May be required to climb ladders and stairs at various heights; enter vessels or equipment with limited access; walk, stoop, bend or squat.

  • Must be able to pass respiratory physical and wear all required personal protective equipment.

  • Must be able to work in confined spaces; able to work at extreme heights; able to work on grating surfaces; able to lift up to 50 pounds; able to work in dusty conditions; able to work in extreme weather conditions.

  • Must be able to read, comprehend, inspect, calculate, count, retain and make sound decisions. 

  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, use and reach with hands, arms and fingers.  Potential exposure to high stress situations and requirement to be available for emergency response upon request.


 


Basic Qualifications


 


  • Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited university or college in a chemistry related field OR equivalent experience.

  • Working knowledge of generating station systems and equipment.

Desired Qualifications


 


  • Eight (8) years of directly related station experience in boiler chemistry; water treatment, analysis, and equipment (demineralizers, carbon filters, RO systems, polishers, etc); wastewater treatment and analysis; drinking water; coal sampling and sampling systems; and environmental testing, sampling, and analysis.

  • Financial knowledge and skills including ability to analyze data.

  • Strong computer skills including ability to use various applications.

  • Effective leadership skills

  • Experience with Process Safety Management, as well as NH3 related processes and equipment.

  • Experience with Reverse Osmosis Systems and powdered resin polisher systems.

  • Experience with FGD systems, equipment and processes.
