Sustaining Software Engineer



Job Purpose:
Pegasystems, the industry leader in business process management and business rules, helps organizations reach new levels of growth and agility by digitizing their goals and policies into software that can intelligently guide, automate, and optimize work.

In a fast-paced environment the Software Engineer will work closely with the technical support and new feature development teams to troubleshoot and fix product defects and to keep GA versions working on the latest platform combinations. To gain greater product knowledge and independence the Software Engineer will also be developing the latest release with the new feature development teams for up to 6 months a year. During this time the Software Engineer will work in an iterative development environment to quickly assimilate project requirements, develop thoughtful designs and implement robust high-quality features within aggressive timeframes. The successful candidate will bring energy and enthusiasm to an engineering team that takes pride in delivering high-quality software.

Key Result Areas:

  • Works with technical support and new feature development teams to address product defects and sustainability issues.
  • Work from requirement specifications to design, develop, implement, and maintain high-quality technical solutions.
  • Provide and meet time estimates for assigned deliverables.
  • Work with Test Engineering to develop test plans and strategies to produce high-quality products.
  • Work with Technical Communications to ensure software features and technologies are properly documented.
  • Other responsibilities and key result areas as required or assigned.
Critical Competencies:

Required Technical Skills:
  • Strong Database Application design skills
  • Strong Algorithmic skills
  • SQL & Stored procedure development (2+ years)
  • JDBC or ODBC development (2+ years)
  • Object oriented programming experience preferably in Java (2+ years)
  • UI development experience with HTML, JavaScript, CSS (2+ years)
  • Web Service development (2+ years)
Desired Technical Skills:
  • Database Internals
  • Websphere or Weblogic Application Server skills
  • Database Performance tuning
  • DB Cross Platform experience (Oracle, SQL Server, DB/2 or DB/2 ZOS)
  • Ability to use Database Analysis Tools
  • Proficiency in J2EE technologies including EJBs, JMS, JSP's and Servlets
  • Web security skills - HTTPS/SSL
  • Technical Customer Service Experience
  • Systems administration skills

Education and Experience Requirements:
Minimum Level of Education:
  • BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
Type of Experience and Minimum Number of Years:
  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience in a technical role.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact in technical discussions.
  • Academic success in a technical field.
Travel Requirements:
  • Less than 10% travel expected for client-related issues.
