System Protection Engineer

About the Job

Design, install, and maintain protective relay, control, and metering systems which will ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of the SECI plant and transmission networks. To provide technical support in power system operations and maintenance of equipment which affects the operation of Seminole facilities.

 



Job Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering required with specialized training in power system analysis, system protection, and relay maintenance. Registration or eligible to become a Registered Professional Engineer in Florida is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in electrical utility or related industries. Professional registration as an engineer in Florida may substitute for one year of experience. An advance degree in engineering, business, or natural sciences may substitute for one year of experience.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Must have a thorough knowledge of transmission systems, system protection, plant and substation design, power system metering, construction and operation. Must have a working knowledge of National Electric Code, Safety Code, and OSHA rules. Must have a thorough knowledge of the various manufacturers equipment in regards to protection of plant, substation, and transmission lines. Must be able to supervise and direct system protection personnel in the duties required of their position for the efficient operation of system protection schemes. Must recognize priority areas and schedule work accordingly. Prepare changes in design for a more efficient operation of the system. Work with other departments in finalizing plans and construction.

Working Conditions:
General office working conditions. May be temporarily assigned to construction site locations. On-site inspection duties involving overnight trips may be required. Occasional travel to locations for meetings with consultants, vendors, regulatory agencies, and equipment suppliers may be required. Field work at generating stations and substations may include extreme temperature and noise levels that may require the use of ear, eye, and head protection equipment. Work outside regular schedule may be required. Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Essential Functions:

* Detail planning of annual schedule for system protection technicians. Set priorities for SECI projects.

* Prepares and updates five year work plan and budget for system protection facility repair, replacement, and upgrades.

* Checks and verifies consultants designs and calculations for SECI protection schemes.

* Assists in preparation of performance appraisals for system protection employees.

* Arranges for training where needed for technicians in system protection group.

* Designs relay protection and metering schemes for new substations, substation additions, and transmission lines.

* Provides analysis of power system conditions which affect the operation of Seminole facilities.

* Responsible for ensuring accurate and timely relay calibration and relay setting calculations for the generating, transmission and substation facilities.

* Develops system protection portion of substation operating instructions and assists System Operations with the  development of restoration procedures for unscheduled outages.

* Analyzes and reports on all system relay actions. Recommends improvements, if corrective action is required. Assists field personnel with troubleshooting and analysis of protection scheme problems.
