Technical Support Specialist – Motor Specialty
Our client, a long term, financially strong, midwest organization servicing the Motor Repair Industry, is seeking a Technical Support Specialist to provide consulting services related to troubleshooting and servicing electrical apparatus. Fast paced environment. Good communication skills required. Strong knowledge of electric motors and drive systems. Competitive compensation and benefit package. Some travel required.
Education: BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred
Experience: Extensive experience (minimum 5 years) in repair or service of rotating apparatus (e.g., ac and dc motors and generators; secondarily, transformers, controls, pumps, etc.); strong knowledge of motor/drive systems. Design and application experience a plus.
Business skills:
- Must be able to communicate effectively with managers, engineers and technicians via phone, email, and fax in a very fast-paced consulting role
- Write technical articles primarily related to motors for publication in newsletter and industry trade press
- Develop and present seminars on technical topics
- Speak to groups on technical subjects
- Represent electrical apparatus service industry on standards-setting bodies
- Computer literate; familiar with most MS programs; comfortable with database applications; timely documentation of consulting calls required
Specific experience or capabilities in motor repair, service, design and redesign:
- Complete understanding of ac motor theory and design, including internal connections
- Extensive knowledge of application, repair, redesign and failure analysis of ac and dc motors and generators
- Solving issues related to performance, vibration, and mechanical failures
- Redesign or modification to meet application requirements
Supplemental desired experience or capabilities:
- Vibration analysis of rotating machinery
- Dynamic balancing of rotating machinery in-house and on-site
- Alignment by laser and dial indicator
- Bearing (ball, roller and sleeve) selection, application, and failure analysis
- Establishing fits for bearings and shaft attachments (e.g., couplings)
- Shaft design, stress analysis, material selection and failure analysis
- Lubricant (oil and grease) selection, application, and failure analysis (e.g., grease incompatibility, oil leakage)
Other relevant experience or capabilities:
- Fan and blower application, repair, redesign and failure analysis
- Gearbox repair and failure analysis
- V-belt drive design and redesign, and failure analysis
- Base and foundation design and redesign for rotating machinery
- Labyrinth and lip seal applications and failure analysis
- Welding, brazing and soldering of ferrous metals, aluminum alloys and copper alloys
- Metalizing of shafts and bearing housings
- Stubbing of shafts
