- Financial and Corporate Compliance: 60-70%. Design and execution of management’s audit programs with respect to Sarbanes-Oxley requirements; growing departmental emphasis on discretionary, operational audits.
- Accounting Projects and Policies: 30-40%. Various special accounting projects; periodic accounting responsibilities related to retiree healthcare, pension, workers’ compensation and long-term disability liabilities.
Principal accounting duties include:
- Assist in the development of annual management assessment plan and documentation tools to support management’s report under section 404.
- Execute testing of internal audit requirements
- Assist in the coordination of the assessment plan and testing requirements with External Audit
- Perform walkthroughs and either document or review the control design for effectiveness.
- Project management and review of staff work papers to help ensure adequacy of testing and appropriate identification of deficiencies.
- Support maintenance and development of key policies and procedures for major functions/processes within Peabody Energy.
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations and related analysis as well as quarterly and annual footnote disclosures for pension, retiree healthcare, and workers’ compensation liabilities.
- Prepare annual financial statements for pension plans, 401 K plans, and employee stock purchase plans.

Job Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting/Finance required; CPA preferred.
- Minimum three to five years of experience in financial reporting or public accounting roles.
- Thorough knowledge and experience of financial controls concepts (internal controls) and auditing techniques.
- Working understanding of GAAP.
- Basic knowledge and willingness to learn the risks and related controls for IT operating systems, databases, and application
- SAP Experience preferred
- Knowledge of computer systems and adept at utilizing personal computers, spreadsheet software (Excel) and presentation software (PowerPoint). Also proficient with Microsoft Access or ACL.
- Effective oral communication skills, including the ability to convey ideas on complex financial and /or IT issues, communicate with outside parties and use active listening skills
- Written communication skills should include the ability to prepare concise and coherent financial narratives an defective materials for use in presentations, including charts and graphs
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize various projects that may be in process simultaneously
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Able to develop cooperation and work collaboratively towards appropriate solutions
