Transportation Operations Manager - 2nd shift

About the Job

This position is responsible for management/supervision of the Dispatch Department. The Dispatch Department plans, routes, dispatches and optimizes the company resources to maximize the revenue load capability for each truck load shipments ensuring timely delivery of products or service to the customers. This position must effectively communicate to the appropriate parties load shipment information for execution of load pick up and delivery. Represents the Company in a positive image working with our employees, customers, and community in a safe and ethical manner to achieve financial success.   

Manages the daily activities of the Dispatch Operations Department in analyzing, developing, planning, dispatching and coordinating the Transportation department from order entry to billing multimodal (TL, LTL, intermodal, air and other) shipments in the most optimal cost effective manner. 

Optimize shipments and continually focus on the improvement of processes to ensure the high quality, cost effective logistics services while meeting corporate goals and objectives. 

  • Collection and input of shipment data, changes/updates in Transportation systems, communicating with customers and strategic partners via appropriate communication.  Manage the mode and carrier selection to satisfy pickup and delivery 
  • Effective and efficient communication with internal/external customers, contracted transportation carriers, and contract air freight carriers. Investigates issues with damage, overages and/or shortages of consignments, etc. Notifies appropriate departments of customer variances. 
  • Daily communication includes supply chain, distribution, and customer service to ensure that the planned activities meet fulfillment requirements. Manages the coordination and truck utilizations according to route/supplier pickup and deliveries. 
  • Resolution of operations issues that result in planning function aberrations.  Assists in the development and maintenance of logistical control data. Keep abreast of changes, developments, and trends in the transportation industry and the potential impact to manufacturing plants, distribution centers and customers (i.e.:  routes, management, legislation, liability etc.). Responsible for monitoring and obtaining KPI and Productivity goals as established by the Director of Transportation and as determined by company ownership for the assigned work group.   Manages the dispatch function in a 24/7 operation to provide leadership and management to off shifts/weekends as required.


    Bachelors degree, preferably in logistics, supply chain or other related discipline.  10+ years experience in transportation or supply chain management and dispatch functions.  Strong communication (verbal and written), analytical and negotiating skills.  Strong customer relations skills.  Working knowledge of federal and state transportation regulations.  General management experience to include staffing, organizaing, motivating, conflict management, supervising and communicating.  Strong computer skills to include, knowledge of TMS systems, Microsoft Office & Excel, etc.
