The mission of the Harrington Oncology Program is to provide the highest quality care for companion animals with cancer, utilizing a combination of state-of-the art diagnostic tests, medical and radiation therapy and surgical techniques. To provide this care in a facility and environment that emphasizes quality of life for animals and support for owners in the form of education, information services and grief counseling. To provide a facility and environment that supports teaching of oncology to veterinary students, interns and residents in training, as well as continuing education for veterinary practitioners, veterinary technicians and the general public. To provide a facility and environment conducive to the study of the causes, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cancer in companion animals. Whenever possible, these studies will complement or support similar work in human cancer through cooperation with human cancer research facilities. To support and promote general awareness about cancer in companion animals in the scientific community and in the general public.
The Veterinary Technician I provides high quality nursing care/treatment to oncology patients in the Harrington Oncology Program and SAH wards by:
- Assisting clinicians and students in clinics;
- Assisting with anesthesia and treatment of radiation therapy patients,;
- Assisting with treatment of chemotherapy patients and providing instruction as needed.;
- Interacting with clients, clinicians, students and staff in a professional manner, representing the oncology service in a positive fashion.
Basic requirements: High School Diploma or the equivalent with minimum one year of related experience. Familiarity with Microsoft Office. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred qualifications: Vocational/Technical training, Associates Degree or BS degree preferred. CVT licensure preferred.VTS-AIMVT(Oncology) preferred.Experience with patient monitoring/treatment equipment; including EKG monitors, fluid administration equipment, centrifuges, IV catheters, various laboratory diagnostic equipment, anesthesia machine, laminar flow hood, linear accelerator. Knowledge of chemotherapy administration. Knowledge of radiation therapy. Excellent working and theoretical knowledge of small animal anesthesia.
