The specialty areas (Cardiology, Clinic technical support, Hemodialysis, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Special Procedures technical support) of the Small Animal Medicine Section provide high quality medical care to their patients and assistance to their respective services. The Ophthalmology service is a busy and sometimes stressful service which provides care to a variety of species including cats, dogs, horses, camelids and exotic pets. In addition, this section creates a positive learning experience for TCSVM students and house staff with regards to each of the services.
The Veterinary Technician will:
- Provide coverage to all the specialty services as required by the demands of the daily schedule. However, a major component of the weekly time will be spent working directly with the Cardiology service;
- Learn how each department operates and be able to fill in without hesitation;
- Provide treatment of medical cases (outpatient & inpatient), surgical cases (prepping, setups, assisting, & post-op medical management);
- Perform anesthesia for special procedures, and perform various special procedures;
- Begin the patient examination process for each service and round with the clinician on the case.
After appropriate training, the Veterinary Technician must be able to:
- Perform the required diagnostic procedures as requested by the service;
- Instruct veterinary students on topics pertaining to each service and be familiar with all the lab work documentation, and stocking and cleanliness of exam rooms.
Basic requirements: High School Diploma or the equivalent and 1-3 years experience. Basic computer skills. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred qualifications: Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program or degree in related field with CVT preferred. Minimum of two years of practice experience at a paraprofessional level; previous experience in a veterinary ophthalmology, cardiology, or neurology practice preferred. Familiarity with patient diagnostic and monitoring equipment preferred.
