Vehicle Drive Cycle Developer
Requisition #948BR
Job/Research Summary
Develop vehicle drive cycle data compression and analysis software tool. Implement the tool and use to perform complex analysis of vehicle drive cycle data collected by DOE's Fleet Testing and Analysis Task.
Job Duties
Position Description:
The position will support NREL’s Vehicle Testing and Analysis Group within the Center of Transportation Technology and Systems Center (CTTS) by providing analytical methods, tools and analysis for in-use vehicle studies. The work will focus on the development and implementation of computational analysis tools which will provide NREL researchers with a better understanding of in-use vehicle behavior. The work will contribute to the further development and implementation of advanced medium and heavy duty vehicles by developing and providing sound scientific methods and tools to assess the in-use performance of vehicles such as hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric and bio-fueled vehicles.
Duties:
The mechanical engineer will work closely with senior level engineers and project managers and be responsible for the development, validation, implementation and utilization of these new methods and analysis tools. The person will utilize engineering knowledge, statistical methods, data filtering, data processing and data compression techniques in support of the Testing and Analysis Group needs and perform detailed analysis on specific vehicle demonstration projects. Specifically, the engineer will:
--develop validated, Matlab GUI based tools to acquire, filter, analyze and compress large amounts of vehicle performance data obtained from in-use vehicle studies
--provide detailed engineering analysis of vehicle performance data using various Matlab and Simulink tools
--provide analysis of signals and apply compression/deconstruction techniques
--support the development of web-based, on-line tools for use by general public
--Interact with DOE and other outside clients as needed
--have a strong understanding of on-road vehicles and have experience obtaining and analyzing in-use vehicle performance
--collaborate with other NREL vehicle system engineers to further develop useful techniques and tools for analyzing vehicle performance
-- expertise in Microsoft Office applications; heavy use of Excel spreadsheet analysis and programming and will need to know how to integrate Microsoft Excel into the various analysis programs above.
Required Education and Experience
Relevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Additional Basic Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Course study and/or demonstrated abilities in the areas of fluids, combustion, thermodynamics, aerodynamics to provide a necessary foundation for development of analysis tools. Experience with Feedback Control Systems/Signal Processing and experience with duty cycle analysis of various mechanical systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of other computational analysis software including Wolfram’s Mathematica, MathCAD and Solidworks to aide in the creation of virtual models to help visualize technology implementation and performance. Demonstrated ability to work independently and the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and clients. Strong interpersonal, communication (oral and written), teamwork and customer focused skills. Knowledge of advanced vehicle technologies and a understanding of fleet / multiple vehicle datasets.
