Veterans Outreach and Retention Coordinator, Office of Academic Access and Opportunity

About the Job

The Suffolk University Veterans Upward Bound program funded by the U.S. Department of Education has been created to help qualified military veterans develop the necessary skills to enroll and succeed in postsecondary education. Veterans receive assessment counseling and an individualized education plan. They take courses in mathematics, laboratory science, composition and literature, and foreign language. Veterans may participate in study skills, tutoring, academic and personal counseling, financial aid planning, college application seminars and cultural events as well.

Reporting to the Associate Director of the Veterans Upward Bound Program and the Director of the Office of Academic Access and Opportunity (OAAO) this position is responsible for outreach to veterans who are eligible for participation. The Outreach and Retention Coordinator will serve as liaison to veterans' agencies, the military and other veterans' education and employment programs. The Outreach and Retention Coordinator will work with the Associate Director and other Suffolk University departments to publicize the project; identify and recruit participants; and coordinate veteran's services contacts for participants. The incumbent will also provide veterans' services counseling to participants and assist the Associate Director with interviewing participants and preparing individualized education plans, and supporting participant retention in the program. This position will also develop and lead program information seminars. Along with the Associate Director this position will manage and maintain a participant database. Perform other duties as assigned.

This is a grant funded position for 4 years.

A Bachelor's degree with emphasis in education, a Master's degree is preferred
Successful professional experience with a demonstrated commitment to working with adult learners and veterans from socio-economically disadvantaged backgroundsExcellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and organizational skills
Experience facilitating workshops and trainings
Strong computer skills
Experience working with social service agencies, and serving clients with psychiatric problems or drug and alcohol abuse problems
Experience working with diverse populations.
Ability to work in the evening and weekends on occasion
Military experience is preferred.
Experience working in veterans' services is preferred.
