    Vice President of Claims

    Applied Underwriters, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, is searching for a VP of Claims to manage a GROWING workers compensation claims Division located in Omaha, NE
     
    The VP of Claims works closely with the president of the company to develop the strategic vision and guidance of the Division.  We are seeking a dynamic leader and "outside the box" thinker who views "industry standards" as archaic and counter-productive to our goal - efficiency. This person must exude strong leadership abilities, possess the executive vision necessary to guide this Division and have a proven management experience in a corporate environment.
     
    Due to sustained sales increases, exponential growth is expected over the next several years.  The VP of Claims will be responsible for guiding the claims organization as necessary through thought leadership and the development and implementation of sound strategic planning and initiatives. The right candidate will increase effectiveness, minimize costs and build credibility both internally and externally through the continued, consistent excellence in the practice and handling of claims.
     
    Responsibilities:

    • Lead and manage the direction, growth and performance of the Claims Division
    • Oversee and direct claims practices and methodology
    • Drive improvement across departments, claims handling and process
    • Develop and communicate the strategy, vision and priorities of the organization and motivate managers to exceed their goals and increase effectiveness across the claims organization
    • Capability with metrics and analytics is required; this aptitude will drive the successful candidate's ability to develop strategic actions from the data
    • Supervise Directors or Department Managers as assigned
    • Communicate, identify and set department strategy that best supports company strategy and allocate department resources to best support strategic goals
    • Develop tactical plans including processes, procedures, and initiatives that will achieve department strategic goals and support company strategic goals
    • Maintain open, effective communication with other Senior Managers to ensure planning and operations are coordinated and actions within supervised departments do not have unintended consequences for other departments
    • Work with Department Managers and Training Department to develop new and improved training programs relevant to supervised departments
    • Ensure the quality, accuracy, effectiveness, and legal compliance of claims processing and claims management, through supervision, auditing, coaching, and enforcement
    • Provide authority for claims decisions, reserves, settlements, and payments, either directly or by delegation
      Monitor and implement changes in relevant state statutes and regulations
    • Coordinate and exchange information as needed with re-insurers, auditors, fronting companies, legal counsel, and other departments within the company
    • Ensure that all legal and contractual obligations of the Claims Department are met
    • Provide an excellent example of leadership at all levels of the Claims Division 

    Requirements:

    • Minimum of Masters degree required
    • Solid public speaking and presentation skills
    • Must have familiarity with systems technology including software implementations and MS Office experience
    • Must possess strong analytical and data analysis skills
    • 5-10 years of insurance industry knowledge preferred
    • High-level corporate management experience required
    • Must be skilled in managing, developing and motivating employees and managers
    • Experience in underwriting, marketing, or additional lines of adjusting preferred but not required
    • Strong negotiation and customer service skills
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to prioritize projects and handle multiple deadlines
