Job Description

Applications Engineer – Machine Cutting Tools

Description
 
Application Engineer interfaces with NC Programmers and Manufacturing Engineers to standardize and develop optimal methods of material removal, machining, fixturing and cutting tool selection to maximize productivity, reduce manufacturing cost and improve the quality of machined parts.  This position requires a candidate to have extensive knowledge of machine cutting tools, an understanding of the required geometries, cutting tool design and selection supporting a machining manufacturing environment.  The successful candidate will provide technical direction to NC Programmers and other process engineers identifying the methodologies, processes, and applications of Metalworking tools used for turning, milling, hole making, and threading as well as the ability to develop an effective tooling system applications. Ideally the candidate will have a wide network of contacts comprising of Cutting Tool Manufacturers, Designers and Sales Engineers in support of the machining and manufacturing of complex machine components.  
 
Specific Requirements:
Analyze data and plan sequence of tooling operations on a number of small and large manual and CNC / DNC vertical and horizontal milling, drilling, broaching, boring, and turning machines.  Develop tooling for machined parts with numerous operational steps, specific dimensions and where requirements to exact tolerances of finish, perpendicularity, concentricity and parallelism may be limited.
  • Work with Process Engineering, Programmers, and Product Specialist to deliver solutions, define part process and tooling requirements thereby achieving the highest quality parts at the lowest cost to the customer.
  • Provide correct machine tool and process recommendations.
  • Apply the correct cutting tools, feed rate, spindle speed, material and grade specifications.
  • Technical knowledge of carbide grades, coatings, hones, modes of failure, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in developing and defining complete process for components by implementing "cutting edge" technologies and application solutions using special and standard tool designs.
  • Confer with Suppliers and Manufacturers by conveying tooling specifications.
  • Provide manufacturing support by troubleshooting and resolving technical problems.
  • Design cutting tools and methodologies used to ensure successfully machining of complex machine parts.  
  • Have sound knowledge in Geometric Tolerances.
  • Provide support of Continuous Improvement efforts.
Must be able to prioritize and support multiple projects.  Off-shift or weekend support may be required. Up to 10% travel may be required for the position.
 
Qualifications
 
Basic Qualifications: 
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering Discipline and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Pro-E, NX (Unigraphics) or similar solid modeling experience applied to cutting tools.
  • Technical knowledge and logical troubleshooting skills.
  • Application and operational knowledge of CNC equipment.
  • A strong mechanical aptitude and prior experience in a machining / manufacturing environment or industry-related experience in cutting tools, metal cutting or CNC machining applications.
Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills combined with knowledge of manufacturing concepts including a wide range of metalworking tools knowledge, experience and contacts. Superior written and spoken communication skills with an enthusiastic, cooperative “can do” attitude are required. The candidate must be a United States Citizen with the ability to obtain a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance. 
 
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous cutting tool design engineering experience in mainly ferrous and stainless materials. 
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, conducting and documenting tool development tests. 
  • Experience documenting process improvement and savings from cutting tool investments. 
  • Experience with Siemens, WinTool or other comparable cutting tool database development and application systems.  
  • Experience with SAP.
