Automation Development Engineer

21st Century Group is an engineering, design and development firm specializing in customized industrial automation systems.  21st Century is located in Owings Mills, MD, a suburb of Baltimore.  We have been in business since 1996 supporting a variety of government and commercial customers.  We are interested in ‘hands-on’ type people who enjoy working on small multi-disciplinary teams to meet the unique challenges associated with designing and developing custom automated electro-mechanical systems.   Our employees work through the entire life-cycle of a program – from developing an understanding of our customers’ challenges and objectives to developing concepts to address their needs, building prototypes of innovative new electro-mechanical systems, finalizing a system concept based on lessons learned from prototype testing, then building, installing and supporting automated systems in a variety of industries.  

 

Responsibilities of the Automation Development Engineer include: 

  Design and development of automation systems, subsystems and components

  Hardware specification (servo motor/drive sizing, power supply sizing, sensor specification, machine controller specification, I/O specification) 

  Machine control logic programming 

  User interface programming 

  Control panel layout and design 

  Participating in prototype build and preproduction testing 

  Optimizing the performance of automated systems through design refinements and rigorous testing

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  A bachelor's or advanced degree in electrical engineering or related field 

  A minimum of five years of experience working with industrial automation technologies

  Experience in using electrical design tools such as AutoCAD Electrical

  A strong understanding of electrical design practices, machine/motion control systems, electro-mechanical systems/robotics, and the use of a variety of industrial sensors

  Programming and systems integration experience  

  A track record of creative problem solving
