Responsible for new product development with special emphasis on latest technology in color and effects for plastics, color instrument technology, and new processes for producing masterbatches. Work with strategic partners on pigment, dyes, special effects, and novelty colorant system for a variety of plastics applications. Responsibilities also include developing new process techniques for making color concentrate using state of the art equipment. Support the development of new color measurement instrumentation and supporting software. 1. Positively lead and manage the projects as assigned. 2. Deliver new products for successful growth of plastics market. 3. Effectively communicate and coordinate activities within multifunctional team and Global Plastics Team. 4. Responsible for multiple projects and be able to prioritize the projects for the Global Plastics applications. 5. Conduct formulation and process development using Design of experiment (DOE). Understand global regulations and their impact on raw material selection for FDA,EU Food contact, and international food legislations. 6. Operate all processing equipment: preparation, setting up, running the machine, optimizing the processing conditions, cleaning, routine and standard maintenance. 7. Use standard test and characterization equipment and devices: preparation, setting up, running the equipment, routine and standard maintenance. Interpret test results, data analysis, write technical reports and technical papers. 8. Maintain knowledge of processing technology and trends. Propose and lead new process and equipment setup and requisition. 9. Contribute ideas for new product development and growth of Plastics market sector. 10. Lead effort to search and file patents as necessary in relation to new plastics products/developments. 11. Participate in applicable trade associations and professional societies, and visit customers as required. Business travel up to 15%.
Knowledge & Skills
BS in Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer or Material Science; Masters preferred; 5 years hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge in thermoplastics, pigments or related industry in product development.
Background in order of preference is (1) Compounder (2) Processor (3) Resin Producer. Material exposure in order of preference is (1) Engineered Resin (2) Compounded or Masterbatch (3) Commodity Resins. Experience in effect pigment and mass coloration is desirable.
Additional Skills and Background:
- Broad knowledge of polymer chemistry, solid state polymeric material and properties, polymer blends/alloys, principles of polymerization - In-depth knowledge and hand on experience in processing technologies of thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers - Plastics formulation, additives, fillers and reinforcements - Thorough knowledge of FDA and EU food regulations and the materials suitable for use in those applications - Plastics testing, analysis, characterization and process structure performance relationship - Manage and track multiple projects and activities - Communicate internally and externally; both verbally and in writing - Initiate innovative concepts and ideas, generate prototype samples, conduct pilot scale trials, transfer the concepts to manufacturing and commercialization - Culturally aware, and experienced in working with diverse groups - Results driven, competitive and self-reliant - Establish and maintain effective working relationships - Work with targets and deadlines
