As our Development & Recruitment Manager (DRM), you will develop broad-ranging relationships with leaders who work with and influence our target population. We serve formerly incarcerated men and women who are committed to transforming their lives and are hungry for a second chance. We offer them rigorous entrepreneurship, employment, and character development training. At Defy, we believe we’re all ex-somethings … so we’re not big fans of the term “ex-offender.” Instead, we call the people we serveEntrepreneurs-in-Training (EITs).


As a DRM, you will develop your own strategies, and then execute. You will engage leaders including Executive Directors of nonprofits, experts in reentry and criminal justice, parole and probation authorities, cultural influencers, local politicians, ministers and faith-based leaders, etc. You will use creative marketing strategies to create partnerships and enroll EITs.


You will develop broad-ranging skills: networking, sales, strategy, marketing, social media, public relations, public speaking, communications, partnership development, and hustle.


You will present Defy’s program and groundbreaking results to small (and occasionally not-so-small) audiences, advocating for life-giving transformational opportunities.


You will be entrusted with your own share of massive responsibility.


You will have the support of teammates who look out for you and want you to succeed.


You will make a difference in the lives of thousands of America’s biggest underdogs.


Although Defy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we take pride in our application of corporate best practices and operate as a lean, results-oriented startup.


  • Develop relationships that lead to the enrollment of Entrepreneurs-in-Training (EITs) in Defy
  • Effectively and persuasively communicate Defy’s value proposition to criminal justice authorities, cultural influencers, faith-based leaders, and other prospective partners
  • Form and manage formal partnerships with organizations that serve prospective EITs
  • Present Defy’s services directly to prospective EITs, and work closely with our Admissions Manager (who conducts interviews) to facilitate the enrollment process
  • Represent Defy at conferences, tradeshows, faith-based gatherings, and speaking engagements
  • Use social media to attract prospective partners and EITs
  • Analyze Defy’s EIT graduate database to gain a better understanding of our target EIT profile
  • Participate in the development of marketing materials used for recruitment
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Director of Business Development regardingrecruitment strategy, growth, methodology, innovation, marketing, etc.




       Demonstrated ability to sell/recruit, with a consistent history of meeting and exceeding performance goals

       History of relationship building and delivering excellent customer service

        Persuasive verbal communications skills; ability to intelligently and credibly articulate Defy’s story to gain the respect of authorities and influencers

        Strong written communication skills with meticulous attention to detail

        Organized, efficient, and willing to get better at both

        Internal fire that drives achievement; confidence, goal-orientation and love of a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment where top performers are rewarded

         Highly industrious with a strong work ethic; sense of urgency/impatience for action

          Integrity and humility that encourages and inspires constituents; strong sense of judgment

          Seeks out constructive criticism and growth

          Preferred, but not required: experience and contacts in the reentry/criminal justice sector

Founded in 2010, Defy Ventures provides a scalable solution to the outrageously expensive problems of incarceration and recidivism in the United States. With more than $4 million in private funding from executives and foundations, Defy is well on its way to achieving its vision of equipping formerly incarcerated men and women to defy the odds.


Defy’s new “blended learning” model combines in-person training with online education. Defy has scaled its ability to serve significantly more EITs. Defy hopes to serve up to 200 EITs in NYC in 2014 and up to 1,000 EITS in 2015.
