JOB SUMMARY OVERVIEW
Performs a variety of duties related to the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of overhead and/or underground distribution systems, transmission facilities, street light systems to provide continuous and dependable electric service
MAIN Responsibilities and functions
Employees in the apprentice program perform duties related to the craft and are consistent with their achieved level within the program, which may include:
The class A Apprentice Lineman works with minimal supervision and has the ability to perform the following duties:
Performs all work on grounded circuits from the pole position and from the aerial lifts and insulated platforms.
Assists in line mechanic switching, phasing and grounding of high voltage circuits in accordance with company tagging procedures, specifications, standards and OSHA rules/regulations.
Assists crew leader in mechanic switching in trans-closures, modules, tap holes, cable poles, pad mount and subsurface transformers, pole mounted single phase or gang switches, reclosurers, motor operated disconnects or other switching points, consulting feeder diagrams.
Assists crew leader with investigating service failure or other trouble on Overhead systems, maintaining and repairing service due to failure, storms or other emergency situations.
Cuts defective devices out of line, installs jumpers, replaces fuses and conductors or does related work to restore circuits and feeders, operating switching devices as directed.
Performs temporary emergency repairs to lead pole riser cable. Replaces buried down or broken circuits, including wire of all types and voltages, reclosers, fuse, cutouts, capacitors, switches and similar equipment.
Replaces a variety of fuses, string, sand, and carbon tetrachloride, current-limiting, voltage fuses on the overhead system.
Installation and maintenance of fuses, switches, pad mount and subsurface transformers, as well as primary, secondary and service cables in duct lines or open trenches.
Uses and interprets readings from test instruments and devices such as cable path and fault location equipment, ammeter, voltmeter, high voltage phasing tools and ohmmeter.
Able to use a wide variety of highly specialized tools and equipment such as hot sticks, hydraulic compression tools, hydraulic saw, impact drill, tension pulling machine, etc.
Able to complete damage reports
work experience and education requirements
- High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent years of experience.
- Ability to become a tagholder for clearance at a Power Company
- Experience in similar position is highly desirable
