ROLE SUMMARY

The leader in this role is responsible for managing the Clinical Bioinformatics group within Precision Medicine (PM) in Early Clinical Development (ECD).   The groups’ responsibilities encompass all programs in the East Coast Research Units (RUs) including Internal Medicine, Inflammation and Immunology,  Rare Disease and CTI.  Scientists in PM Clinical Bioinformatics work collaboratively across research, technical, and clinical teams to deliver computational support for high dimensional biomarker data sets for early clinical trials.  

The individual in this position is able to communicate effectively with senior leaders, lead and collaborate with colleagues within a matrix organization, and leverage technical and scientific information from a variety of sources in order to effectively  enable data analysis and drive program decisions.

The leader in this role will demonstrate the ability to build a high performance team where technical excellence, empowerment, career development and leadership at all levels is expected and fostered.  The person in this position will have a demonstrated record of developing partnerships in a matrix environment, and must have excellent interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills.  In addition the individual must have strategic insights to enable the development and evolution of the group and its available toolkit to support the changing demands of the Pfizer portfolio.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Precision Medicine Clinical Bioinformatics Group Leadership:

  • Provides leadership to small group of Director and Senior Manager level colleagues, including responsibility for ensuring colleague training, performance management, workload management and prioritization, technical supervision, and ensuring conduct of compliance related activities of direct reports. 
  • Defines and evolves best practices across the group and partners with Research Unit, Business Technology (BT) and partner line bioinformatics experts to align approaches, develop best practices and assess and develop new technology.    
  • Responsible for ensuring high-quality data analysis is incorporated into clinical exploratory-research programs, including contributions to Exploratory Analysis Plans and summary of results, in partnership with biostatisticians and other team members.
  • Partners closely with RUs, Clinical Teams, Statistics, BT and PM functions to identify, pilot and incorporate new bioinformatics tools to support clinical trials
  • Responsible for identifying external collaborators to expand capabilities and explore new methodologies.  Responsible for establishing and maintaining external collaborations to specified timelines and milestones
  • Contribute effectively to the strategy for Precision Medicine, Big Data Analytics and application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning approaches to derive insights from complex datasets.

Precision Medicine Leadership Team:

  • Core member of the ECD PM leadership team enabling cross discipline planning, colleague development and engagement. 
  • Coaches and mentors others in the organization and actively participates in development strategies to enable effective workforce and succession planning within PM.
  • Participates in and/or leads PM strategic, scientific and process initiatives to develop new or expanded capabilities in support of portfolio delivery and contributes to the development of the direction of PM.  

QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD or equivalent in computational biology, bioinformatics or related disciplines with minimum of 10 years of experience.
  • Able to effectively manage a diverse and dynamic workload
  • Programming skills in Java, Perl, Python or R with expertise in big data, data visualization, and web based applications.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of statistical analytical methods that can be applied to genetics and omics data analysis.
  • Experience working with large  exploratory clinical trial datasets and strong working knowledge of high dimensional exploratory biomarker platforms (eg. transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomics)
  • Expertise in next generation sequencing technologies and data analysis pipeline development
  • Experience in vendor interactions including managing delivery to timelines and ensuring quality deliverables
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, influence and champion bioinformatics strategies with scientific team audiences and management.  Proven record of developing effective partnerships in a matrix environment
  • A record of managerial/supervisory and leadership excellence: proven success in talent identification and development, conflict management, effective team building, strategic agility and business acumen.   
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly convey vision, establish strategic direction and set priorities.   Experience presenting to external multi-disciplinary scientific audiences.
