Process Analysis & Controls Engineer

About the Job

We are currently seeking a Process Analysis & Controls Engineer to join our North America R&D team at our World Headquarters in Perrysburg, OH.

The selected candidate will provide expertise and technical leadership in the cross-functional design of glass container manufacturing systems with an emphasis on the development and analysis of complex, interdisciplinary systems.  These systems range from relatively simple sub-systems to entire machines designed to melt and refine glass and to form, anneal, and inspect glass containers.  In order to provide multi-disciplinary guidance to others on the team, an inherently curious and cross-functional candidate will be able to engage in many of the multiple functions of a traditional engineering team including conceptual development of mechanical and electrical systems, complex analysis using current computing tools, control systems development, and material science applications for the purpose of determining concept feasibility.  The selected candidate will be involved in the development, start-up, and testing of control systems and the mechanical systems under control.  Many of these systems require knowledge of the physical effects of motion on glass in the flexible state and multivariable processes.  The ideal candidate has an understanding of the dynamics of rigid and flexible bodies, multivariable control system design, and application knowledge of both.  Along with this understanding of the principles, the ideal candidate has the ability to mathematically model and analyze the systems in order to architect a control system and to offer guidance to other engineering disciplines.  The use of numerical methods and simulation are often necessary and the ideal candidate is able to make use of current computing technology in the analysis of systems.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

(All other duties as assigned)

  • Contribute innovative concepts as a key member of a development team charged with the analysis, design, modeling, simulation, and prototype testing of glass container forming and glass melting systems.
  • Apply analytical methods to understand the feasibility of concepts, motion, and performance.
  • Participate in the architecting of machine and process control systems including the integration of commercial systems such as PLCs, servo systems, and industrial robots that will be implemented by other team members.
  • Work together with engineers and scientists of all disciplines and bridge the gap between them.
  • Provide guidance to project engineers and scientists to ensure that system designs are feasible and work to identify areas of concern that may not be apparent to a professional without a multidisciplinary background.
  • Prepare high quality written technical reports summarizing activities and recommendations and be able to verbally communicate effectively.

SCOPE AND IMPACT

Responsible for providing technical expertise in his or her field and is also expected to contribute in multiple technical fields.  Plans and executes independent work within the project team.  Devises and implements new approaches to solving problems.  Is part of a team responsible for the development of high productivity, glass container manufacturing processes and equipment.

  • Experience with the use of supporting mathematical tools such as Python, Matlab or Mathcad.
  • Demonstrated history of curiosity, invention, and innovation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desired:

  • Experience with the capabilities of control system components including, PLCs, HMI panels, servo systems, motor controls, variable frequency drives, SCADA systems, computers, and networks.

  • Basic understanding of rigid and/or flexible body dynamics with an emphasis on mechanism motion and physical effects on payloads.
  • Good working scientific knowledge of industrial processes such as melting, material forming, material handling, and quality assurance systems.
  • Experience with procurement, build, and testing of prototype hardware and systems.
  • Experience with process control system architecture for multivariable processes that may include long dead times and response times.
  • A working knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid flow and experience working with and developing instrumentation of the same.
  • Glass manufacturing process knowledge (melting and forming) would be a plus.
  • The ideal candidate will have education and/or experience in multiple disciplines
