Vertex Inc. is currently looking for a Senior Systems Engineer who will provide leadership, direction and support for Vertex's Information Technology UNIX systems computing infrastructure.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Information Technology expertise to Vertex business projects

    • Identify relevant technologies, provide leadership, and implement solutions based upon subject-matter expertise and experience;

    • Be responsible for delivery of results against commitments while participating on cross-functional teams as required.

  • Design new and alternative solutions

    • Collaborate with IT management, peers and business partners to identify opportunities to leverage systems under management and toward business projects, goals and commitments;

    • Prepare cost and feasibility analyses surrounding new solutions, enhancements and alternatives to existing solutions;

    • Implement current best-practice technology solutions and translate them into business cases relevant to Vertex’s environment and culture;

    • Assist in developing business case and life-cycle studies around appropriate new solutions, upgrades, and alternatives.

  • Support in-place solutions in technology space

    • Provide advanced technical support for Vertex’s Unix Information Technology Infrastructure;

    • Operate, document and maintain the current environment.

  • Monitor and maintain solutions in the technology space

    • Support, install, enhance, and customize Unix operating systems as required through the Service Desk;

    • Develop, implement, and maintain business continuity plans to include disaster recovery procedures;

    • Design, initiate, and maintain a resource utilization and capacity plan for the storage infrastructure supporting business requirements on the Unix platforms;

    • Provide system performance reports to management on a regular basis as requested;

    • Provide operational reports regarding system status and performance, problems and resolutions, service level performance, and other such status and performance measures as appropriate;

    • Provide annual input to budget forecasting;

    • Review and align current Unix Infrastructure elements with best practice life cycle management methodologies.

    • Design, initiate, and maintain a software currency plan, including patch management processes, concerning the in-place solutions.

  • Support a dynamic team environment at Vertex by collaborating with other departments, contributing time, effort and ideas.

  • Enhance job knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies;

  • Other duties as requested.

 We encourage individuals possessing all of the following minimum qualifications to apply immediately:

 Education & Training:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or similar technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Experience:

  • 10+ years of direct operating system administration, support and design.

  • Strong documentation and structured analysis capabilities.

  • Experience with the following:

    • IBM AIX (iSeries a plus)

    • HP-UX

    • Sun Solaris 5.6 – 5.11

    • Platform disaster recovery planning and documentation.

    • Linux

  • Proficiency in Perl, BASH, and KSH Scripting.

  • Proven experience in development of enterprise UNIX strategies and associated technologies.

  • Demonstrable ability to articulate design points and underlying architectural elements while developing a business case in support of enterprise strategies.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while supporting multiple technical areas of a complex computing environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proven self-discipline and motivation.
