Sr. Software Engineer - OSG (14-018)

About the Job

Summary:
The Senior Software Engineer works with our expert team of architects to deliver revolutionary new
highperformance
storage systems solutions. This role will focus on designing new system features,
implementing enhancements, and debugging issues with the current system.

Essential Job Function & Responsibilities:
● Design and develop high quality, well tested production bash shell scripts
● Implement Linux kernel code changes
● Triage issues reported by the field and the testing team and participates in discussing and
implementing highquality
solutions in a timely and efficient manner
● Participate in discussions and implementation of software support for new hardware, firmware, and
features associated with new storage application platforms developed by Xyratex
● Monitor open source and 3rd party sites for fixes related to drivers and firmware for components
used by the Xyratex platform
● Apply industrystandard
design, coding, debugging, and testing best practices
● Perform root cause analysis of storage system and component failures including disk drives, storage
controllers, and system software
● Provide high quality documentation, release notes and root cause analysis, where required
● Collaborate with team members on reviews, defect root cause analyses, etc.
● Interact with peers and senior members of other Xyratex teams
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Required:
● Bash shell scripting fluency
● Linux kernel programming experience
● Thorough knowledge of the Linux runtime interfaces to storage and network diagnostic monitoring
● Knowledge of SAS and PCIe
● Proactive
problem solving mindset
● Analyzing and interpreting data
● Ability to multitask in a fastpaced
diverse development environment
● Effective communication skills (willing/able to consider other viewpoints and able to advocate your
own viewpoint)


Desired:
● MDRAID knowledge is highly desirable
● HA knowledge (heartbeat/pacemaker) highly desirable
● Cluster/HPC knowledge
● Python/Perl scripting
● Knowledge of Unix variants: AIX, BSD, etc.
● Familiarity with the SAM, SPC, and SBC SCSI standards
● Experience working in a lab environment
● Knowledge of SCRUM, Kanban, and TDD
● Test automation
Required Education & Experience:
● Bachelor's degree (CS, EE, or Math preferred) or equivalent work experience
● Graduate degree in (CS, EE, or Math preferred) preferred
● 8+ years of experience developing Unix kernel, device driver, and user level commands using C and
bash/Perl/Python scripts
● 5+ years of experience with Linux kernel internals
● 5+ years experience developing storage solutions using SCSI/SATA/SAS, PCIe, HDD, SDD,
HBA/HCA, switches (both IB and Ethernet), and firmware
Schedule Requirements:
● Customary business hours in the candidate’s geography
● Flexibility to accommodate work in a distributed global team across multiple time zones
Environmental Conditions:
● Typical office environment
Travel Requirements:
● Occasional domestic and international travel, at times on short notice
