Sr. Technical Director, System Architecture

Summary:

Reporting to the VP Development, the Sr. Technical Director Systems Architecture plays an essential role in the development and planning of system architecture for the ClusterStor Business Unit (BU).  The Sr. Technical Director Systems Architecture will provide technical leadership and vision to a staff of system architects working on development projects; and in partnership with community and government projects.  The individual will help govern the direction that various architectural solutions will take for different products.  The range of technologies covered will span storage solutions for the HPC, Big Data, and enterprise markets.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

• Guides, reviews, and approves the efforts of the System Architecture staff
• Heavily involved in setting long-term technical direction for the BU, in cooperation with the Product Management and Product Strategy personnel.
• Collaborates with other leaders within the organization to deliver best of breed products to the market in a timely fashion. 
• Works with the broad organization to turn customer and product requirements into solutions that can be delivered to the market in a timely fashion
• Works with the broad organization to help resolve technical roadblocks encountered during the product life cycle, including performance issues of proposed or delivered solutions
• Promotes the BU’s technical presence in various communities, driving attendance of conferences/forums by the system architecture staff and senior technical leaders in the BU
• Works with the BU leader, Product Management, Product Strategy, the system architecture team, and others in the broad organization to help shape the long term technical and product roadmap for the company
• Works with other BUs in Xyratex to foster collaboration to deliver best in market solutions
• Evangelize the adoption the use of new technologies, processes, and methodologies to promote a cutting edge and innovative technical environment at Xyratex
• Works with partners of technologies incorporated into ClusterStor products
• Interacts with customers to understand their short and long term requirements to be incorporated into ClusterStor products and vision
• Provides architectural leadership by promoting excellent architecture principles and methodologies
• Manage multiple direct reports; and an overall staff of 10+ personnel.
• Mentors system architects and other senior technical personnel

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Ability to design systems from concept to product

·         Ability to evolve existing systems to adapt to changes in technology or the market place

·         Knowledge of architectural design processes

·         Ability to lead senior technical personnel to drive issues to closure

·         Ability to work with various organizations to progress product strategy and implementation

·         Understanding of distributed systems required

·         Understanding of storage technologies and concepts required

·         Experience with Lustre or other distributed file system highly desirable

Education and Experience:

Required Experience

• Engineering (EE/CS) degree required

·         15+ years software/hardware engineering experience

·         10+ years leading and/or managing organizations

·         Experience building distributed system solutions required

·         Experience with various storage technologies required

·         Experience designing solutions for performance required

·         Track record of creating IP including generation of patent filings and awards

Travel Requirements:

·         Occasional domestic and international travel, at times on short notice.

·         Current passport and no history of declined visas, or entry refusal to any country
