Surgical Systems Analyst

Responsible for daily support activities of all enterprise surgical users of the Information Technology System; including planning, design, implementation, documentation, and Maintenance. These tasks are accomplished through the use of system analysis skills, query tools, and system definition tools. Primary owner of system setup, installation, testing, and is responsible for the working with HQIT education staff to training of all required users. Reviews department work flow processes making recommendations to achieve full functionality of IT systems. Identifies and assists in the resolution of issues as they relate to the systems modules and functionality. Work directly with the departmental staff to design and use the system to continuously improve workflow and end user efficiency.  Beyond department staff, will work with HQ Material Management to help design inventory management expectations as it relates to the system build.  This position will also work with departmental leads to meet with surgeons and Para-professionals to review and implement surgical preference lists.


Job Duties / Responsibilities:



1. Works closely with  the Surgical department to identify, document, track and resolve all computer related issues

2. Maintains Surgical systems master files in coordination with users departments.

3. Researches problems and recommends acceptable solution in connection to IT systems and the use of Applications.

4. Directly involved and manages the implementation of the surgical services system performing the following functions:

  • Direct management of the selected vendor for implementation services
  • Works directly with surgical department staff to either clean up or create necessary data structures inclusive but not limited to the following:
    • Item Master
    • Procedure Master
    • Equipment Master
    • Resource Maps (preference Cards)
  • Through direct involvement with surgical department staff, assist the vendor in the build and prospective management of the systems to create the most efficient workflow possible
  • Work directly with the Scheduling Analyst (IT) to design, implement, test and support the scheduling of surgical cases through the system
  • Work directly with IT technical staff and Bio Med to integrate surgical arena equipment into the surgical system.

5. Working directly with surgical  and IT staff manage the functionality and use of the system prospectively

6. Working with IT and surgical staff, manage and implement necessary periodic upgrades.  As part of this, implement new technology available as part of the version release.

7. Manages all other IT related system that are used by surgical staff as part of the preoperative process to ensure proper integration between system and end user functionality

8. Continually review the use of the system as it relates to surgical workflow to determine if the system functionality can improve departmental workflow.

9. Monitors and follows up on all open issues.

10. Trains staff, along with continued updates as systems are upgraded.

11. Supports departments Information needs by designing reports, coordinating data and or/working with vendors for system modifications.

12. Responsible for creating all user login requests for related systems.

13. Through education and prospective use of the systems become proficient in query writing as necessary

14. Coordinates maintenance, upgrades and testing processes for all related systems.

15. Assists the IT Director in preparing special projects and reports. Uses various report–writing tools to generate and format necessary data.

16. Maintain open communications with all IT staff as well as user departments.

17. Maintains the skill and ability to function as primary support person for all assigned applications.

18. Provides regular updates to the IT Director

19. Performs other duties as assigned

20. Maintains proactive relationship with all software vendors as necessary to properly mange open items to ensure a timely resolution of software related issues.

21. Evaluates new projects to determine scope and priority.  Coordinates the design, development and implementation of authorized projects.

22. Acts as liaison between the ancillary departments and the Information Technology

Minimum Education:  RN Preferred.  Bachelor’s degree in nursing, computer science, management information systems or a related technical or clinical field from an accredited institution required.  A masters degree in the above listed areas is preferred.


Minimum Experience:  


Clinical: A minimum of 6 years experience in surgical services and proven experience managing or implementing a surgical IT system.  Prior experience with the installation of the Cerner Millennium products, preferred.  An understanding of analytical processes, along with demonstrated proficient computer skills related to spreadsheet use, plus database and query abilities.

Technical: A minimum of six years recent experience in a healthcare setting, with four years of direct experience with clinical computer system applications is required.  Prior experience with the installation of a surgical system, particularly the Cerner Millennium products, preferred.  An understanding of analytical processes, along with demonstrated proficient computer skills related to spreadsheet use, plus database and query abilities.


Must have organizational and planning skills including the ability to adapt to frequent interruptions,

prioritize tasks, maintain performance under pressure, and anticipate the needs of others.
