Media Relations Specialist
Media Relations Specialist – Silver Spring, MD
Will provide media relations products in coordination with the NOAA Office of Communication serving NOAA Fisheries and the NOAA Communications Office.Will work with NOAA Fisheries Communications team and NOAA Legislative and NOAA External Affairs to develop clear media relations products including announcement strategy, communications plans, news releases, holding statements, talking points, web stories, tweets, and news conference planning. Will provide evaluation and guidance on agency activities that might benefit from or generate news media coverage; support response to incoming media inquiries, prepare and facilitate media interviews, and support media relations; and maintain the office Twitter account, media page, and write stories for website posting. Will develop, update and submit the office weekly reports to leadership, including media contact tracking report and news clips packages
3 years of experience serving as a spokesperson supporting science for an agency, private company, public relations firm, or non-governmental organization. Must have demonstrated ability to write and edit communications products issued to news media, such as news releases, statements, talking points, or op-eds. Requires experience executing media relations events intended for news media; answering inquiries from all types of news media; and using social media, particularly Twitter. Must have excellent writing and editing skills and have the ability to respond to reporters by researching and developing answers to scientific questions.
Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
BS in Marketing, Communications, related natural science, related discipline, or equivalent.
